What a difference 3 years can make

June 14th 2010 we were surprised and socked that our first baby joined us in the world. See, she wasn’t supposed to arrive until July 10th, which would have been my 30th birthday. No, this little girl wanted her own day, her own month and we couldn’t be more happy with her little plan.

6 Months Monkey Update

Yup, another month has gone by and Hilary is now 6 months old (and eight days or so)! She is growing into her own personality and still a curious little girl; looking around the corner for Daddy, watching big sister Lilly dance around the house and attempting to show Maclean lots of love by reaching for her.

Lilly, Mommy and Hilary

Lilly, Mommy and Hilary

She is now 15 lbs 3 oz and 65.5 cm long

Likes:

  • Touching her toes
  • Getting tickled … and then giggling
  • Sitting up
  • Sitting in her high chair
  • Playing with friends
  • Watching big sister do everything

Dislikes:

  • No being fed fast enough
  • Bottles. urgh! She still won’t take a bottle *mommy dislikes this too*
Oh those eyes

Oh those eyes

New Happenings:

  • Three days after turning 5 months old she started reaching and holding on tight to her toes! This is one of her favourite things to do
  • We started giving her solids around 5 1/2 months, she just didn’t seem to be content. Her first foods were avocado, sweet potatoes, peas, carrots, rice cereal, banana’s, barley cereal and pears. She wasn’t a fan of pear’s at first but is coming to enjoy them.
  • Next foods up: chicken, oatmeal, tofu, green beans, apples, squash, zucchini just to name a few
  • After she starting having solid food she became more content with Daddy! What a relief, seriously. I couldn’t leave the room or he couldn’t pick her up without lots of crying. She is loving her kisses and snuggles from Daddy 🙂
  • She has also stopped pooping in the bath tub! Thank you lord! Oh man this was starting to get out of hand!
  • Rolling from back to front a few times.
  • We also started sleep training because it was taking almost an hour to get her to bed. I know for some people sleep training isn’t cool, but it worked for Lilly and is working for Hilary too. We are getting more efficient at bed time and she is sleeping better than before.
  • We’ve moved from three short naps to one in the morning and a longer one in the afternoon *happy mama*

Operation “Get Fit” Week 6 Workouts 6/2/13 – 6/8/13

The weeks are flying by and I can’t believe that I have started week 7 of this Get Fit Challenge already. This is what I was up to last week:

Sunday – rest day

  • Really, I was just feeling super lazy. C’est la vie!

Monday – Ripped in 30 Level 3

  • Had a great workout and then registered for the Halifax Run or Dye event in September at Ski Martock! Woot woot! I can’t wait for this.

Tuesday – Ripped in 30 Level 3

  • At the beginning of the workout I was toying with the idea of moving up to level 4 this week. However, by the end of the workout my thoughts said for me to stay put.
  • I’m feeling stronger but kinda wish I was losing a little more weight at this point. I’ve also been thinking about doing longer workouts….we’ll see.

Wednesday – National Running Day!

  • Ran 2.6 km in 17 minutes. It was the most perfect evening for a run, a light cool wind whirling around with the sun ever so warm. I did my normal route that I haven’t done in a few weeks and my legs felt like dead weights. It was a weird feeling but I pushed through it and felt great afterwards. So great that I did………
  • Ripped in 30 Level 3. It was hard at the beginning on my thighs but I managed to get through it and was at the end before I knew it. After this workout I did a little extra stretching and made the mistake of taking a peek of level 4. I was thinking of moving up soon…we’ll see how soon that is.
  • Tomorrow is a rest day for me – ha, after this workout I know my body will need it.

Thursday – Rest Day.

  • Even though this was a much-needed rest day, I felt guilty that I wasn’t working out. Weird, eh?

Friday – Ripped in 30 Level 3

  • Wasn’t really into working but I did it anyway.
  • I found myself yawning during the middle of the workout – not sure if that’s because I was bored with the level or because I was extremely tired. Hilary’s not giving us many hours of sleep at night.
  • I felt happy I did the workout but it wasn’t anything awesome.

Saturday – Ripped in 30 Level 4

  • Time to move on. I moved up to Level 4 and it was great. I found it was the easiest one to move up to compared to the other levels. It was easy by any means but it wasn’t as hard as I was expecting.

Overall:

  • I am feeling good about my progress…….drum roll………I can now zip up the bridesmaid dress all the way! I’ll post some before/after pictures soon. I put the dress on the other day for my mom and her friend and managed to zip it all the way. I was rather surprised and excited! Go me!
  • Starting to question why I wanted to do each workout over 2 weeks instead of one. I may only do one more week of level 4 and move on to something else in my DVD workout collection.

Curried Cauliflower with Chickpeas {vegan}

A while back my mother came for a visit and made this amazing Curried Cauliflower (with Chickpeas) dish for us. She got the recipe from Chatalaine Magazine: January 2012 issue.  You know when someone show’s up at your door step with dinner it’s like they have saved the day! At least, that’s how I felt. When you have a baby (first, second etc), it’s always helpful when you don’t have to put together a healthy meal, walk your dog one day or fold your laundry – thank you Mom & Dad for doing that 🙂

This is a must try. The first time I made it our toddler even had some.

Curried Cauliflower with Chickpeas:

Curried Cauliflower with Chickpeas {vegan}

Curried Cauliflower with Chickpeas {vegan}

Ingredients:

1 tbsp olive oil

1 sweet onion (such as Vidalia) thinly sliced

1 tbsp granulated sugar

2 tbsp minced fresh ginger

2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced (I minced mine)

2 tsp garam masala

2 tsp balsamic vinegar

1/4 tsp each salt and pepper

1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

1 small head of cauliflower

1 can (19 oz / 540 ml) chickpeas, drained and rinsed

1/4 cup raisins (I double up on this)

4 cups packed fresh baby spinach

Basmati Rice (however much you prefer)

All cooked up

All cooked up

Directions:

  1. Heat oil over medium-high heat; cook onion and sugar, stirring occasionally, until beginning to brown, about 6 minutes.
  2. Add ginger, garlic, garam masala, balsamic vinegar, cayenne, salt and pepper; reduce heat to medium-low and cook, stirring occasionally, until onion is deep golden, 8 to 10 minutes.
  3. Prepare basmati rice.
  4. Cut cauliflower into florets to make 6 cups. Add to pan along with chicpeas and raisins; cover and cook, stirring once or twice, until cauliflower is tender, about 18 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat. Stir in spinach.

I think it’s even better the second day after the flavours have had a chance to sit. Easy to freeze and to take to lunch – your co-workers will be jealous just by the smell of your lunch.

Hope you enjoy!

Operation “Get Fit” Week 5 Workouts 5/26/13 – 6/1/13

Last week’s workouts; week 5 in Operation “Get Fit”:

Sunday 26th – Ripped in 30 Level 2

  • I was feeling pretty good after my workout, especially after taking two days rest because of this nasty head cold that I have. I am starting to get bored of level 2.

Monday 27th – Ripped in 30 Level 2

  • It’s official, I am bored and not interested in level 2 anymore …. during the whole workout I was thinking I should move up a level. Yikes!

Tuesday 28th Ripped in 30 Level 3!

  • I decided it was time to move up to level 3 and was dreading it for a few days. I’ve planned on doing each level for 2 weeks (not every day but most days of the week plus running or another workout).
  • I didn’t feel like I had two left feet when I went from level 1 to 2 – so that was good
  • BUT, I felt like I was completely out of shape! This level was by far the hardest for me and I was already not looking forward to level 4.
  • So glad I did it.

Wednesday 29th – Unplanned rest day

  • Was still feeling super sick and my body was worn down. I rested in the evening instead of working out…and by rested I did the dishes, swept the floor, folded laundry and started planning for Lilly’s 3rd birthday party.
  • Ah well, you win some you lose some.

Thursday – Ripped in 30 Level 3

  • I have to admit, I was pretty pissed off at the beginning of the workout – something I haven’t felt in a long long time! I didn’t want to do it – simple. I wasn’t in love with the thought of working out let alone the exercises I had to do.
  • I had quite a few emotions during that workout and by the end I was happy and pumped that I got through the workout feeling so much better. It’s amazing what a workout can do for your mind, body and soul.

Friday – another unplanned night off

  • Just wasn’t feeling it tonight. I had been on my own with the girls as my husband had been on a fire call for about 9 hours – crazy nasty fire. The girls and I had a great night, bed time was awesome but it took me a long time to clean up dinner, dishes, toys etc. I was just spent by the time 9 pm hit so I went to bed.

Saturday – Ripped in 30 Level 3

  • It was super hot today: 32 C plus humidity. My parents came to visit after having an amazing trip in Scotland and Sai had another fire call that night. I was supposed to go over to a friend’s house with the group of women I am running the Mud Hero with in July but after our busy and scattered evening I couldn’t pull it together to go.
  • So, I worked out instead.  Crazy – YES. But I had miss a few days this week and felt like I needed to get it in. Plus our basement was the coolest spot in the house to be.
  • It was an awesome workout but during the last “abs’ section I almost lost my dinner. That was a terrible feeling.

It’s funny, all week I thought I wasn’t getting enough workouts in and after reading each day again I realised that I managed to workout 5 days this week. Not too shabby! Week 6 has started and it’s hard to believe we are getting so close to being finished this “operation”. I am already planning my next round of workouts – not an “operation” but more of a commitment to myself to be active 4-5 days a week; more running and looking at 5k’s / 10k’s for the fall!
