Fit In Your Workout

It’s been a crazy week here and I haven’t had time made time for a good workout. I haven’t let that get in my way of trying to do a little here and there. I try to find some time to workout (a.k.a. increase heart rate) each day  even if I can’t make time, I always have 10 minutes.

So, I fit my workouts in where I can this past week….

1 – While running errands at the mall for 2.5 hours….I walked extra laps on each floor of the mall (1-2 laps) and up the stairs multiple times – even after I was done shopping.

2 – While cleaning the house last night once the girls went to bed as I had to get the house ready for Hilary’s Birthday party today. I did this workout below twice. Randomly in-between cleaning the upstairs of the house and the basement. I used the girls play mats since they are soft on the body versus the hard floor, kept my sticky-note and pen with me. I messed up my stop watch and was only able to “time” the first round. It was around 10 minutes of fitting something in….better than sitting on the couch.

Not major workouts but it was something. A few tips on fitting small workouts in during the day:

1. Park your car further away from the store and walk a little more.

2. Walk extra laps before shopping, in-between different stores and after shopping.

3. Take the stairs – ALWAYS.

4. If you take the bus, get off earlier and walk for 20 minutes or more.

5. Stop what you are doing and do 10-20 of the following: jumping jacks, squats, push-ups, tricep dips and then get back to what you where doing, Repeat it 1-2 more times, this could only take 5-15 minutes of your time. Think of it as some “me time” 🙂

Five Things Friday

This Elf 4 Health challenges has opened my eyes a little:

1. Unroll.Me – fantastic app/website that un-subscribes you from any/all email list you want. Look it up!

2 – a: When your body is stressed out it will take the good out of you. I need intense workouts 1-2 days of the week. I just need to run, don’t get me wrong the yoga, walking and climbing extra stairs this week was nice but I just need some fast paced workout. Sure happy I have a soccer game tomorrow night and I am planning on packing my running gear for work on Monday.

2 – b: The girls are in their beds and I’ve got to clean the house, prep more for the party, do the typical dishes/laundry and in between all that, I plan on doing a few rounds of squats, sit-ups, jumping-jacks, my new bird-dog move, tricep dips, and russian twists. This should be interesting and I’m going to time it on my watch to see how long I end up “working out”.  #FallintoFitness30DayChallenge.

Other things…..

3. I spent quality time with my biggest girl today…wrote a letter to Santa, made cup cakes, cake and other food for Hilary’s party tomorrow. We also did some crafts for Hilary’s party …. party favours … polka dot theme.

4. I don’t like planning children’s birthday parties. Totally thought I’d be all over it but in reality I don’t love it. To be fair, my husband is away and was away for Lilly’s party last June, so I’m doing it all on my own. Not fun 😦 Oh well, the good news is that Sai will be home for Hilary’s party tomorrow and I’ve got some good vegan and non-vegan eats. Keeping it simple for my own sanity.

5. The next week is going to be intense (Sat to Sat): birthday party, soccer game, Lilly’s soccer, I start work, personal event happening, I’m back at work and I travel for work two days next week, Sai is away….oh man, I am already looking forward to next Friday! HA!

Oh, Thursday…we meet again.

Wow, it’s been a busy week! I’ve been into work twice (once for a meeting), ran a million shopping errands, walked countless miles, have had very low impact workouts (walking and climbing stairs) and am ready for the weekend already!

My husband is away working so my mother offered to watch Hilary one day which then turned into two days. We took a quick trip to the city today where Hilary hung out with Grammy and Grandad while I shopped till I dropped.  I managed to get a few sweet pre-black friday deals….in Canada! Crazy, eh! What’s with Canadian companies jumping on board Black Friday? I always thought it was an american thing. Oh, wait….it’s all about making money…I forgot. Yes, we, here in Canada are having Black Friday sales tomorrow, even some pre-sales today….it just seems very odd to me. Ahh well, I took the bait today.

I haven’t managed many good workouts…a little yoga and a tone of walking over the last few days. Since I knew I was going to be walking in the mall today I intentionally walked a few extra laps. {I was secretly a mall crawler today} And by a few extra laps, I actually walked each floor 2-3 times, got my heart rate up (had to take off my jacket) and climbed the stairs a million times….at least it felt like that. My thighs were tired from climbing so many stairs by the end of my shopping. Gotta get my workout in some how, right?!?!

We’ve got a BIG weekend coming up…Little H turns 1 next week so we’re having a little par-tay!!! It’s going to be interesting….6 toddlers that are 3 – 3.5 years old and 5 babies 6-15 months old…plus parents. I’m sure looking forward to the Vegan Chocolate Cup Cakes Lilly and I are making together 🙂

Elf 4 Health Update Day 4: Make a Phone Call. I called my best friend Carrie. She wasn’t home 😦 Going to try again when she get’s off work because we never get to chat anymore with our busy lives. She’s one girl that you can call and it’s like we just talked yesterday. She’s just lovely 🙂

Whole Body Workout {new workout}

It’s been a little while since I posted a workout (from someone else’s expertise) and it was fitting or Day 3 of the Elf 4 Health challenge to “try a new workout” along with my Fall into Fitness Challenge!!!!

This is my workout today and I’m hoping to get in either a run on my own (wishful thinking), a walk with H and Maclean or a little yoga in the evening. I’ll keep you guessing as to what workout I managed to fit in.

Why did I pick this one? Well, I figured I could do all the exercised but I had no idea what “bird dog” means, so I googled that.

I love Google and YouTube – I’d be lost these last few weeks with my workouts (yoga mainly).

Sh*t, Reality Set In Yesterday

Urgh!

I go back to work in a week. I’m totally cool with that…I’ve had a fantastic year on maternity leave with Hilary. We’ve had our ups and downs but kept going and now here we sit…well, actually, she’s sleeping and I’m standing at the computer right now. But that’s not the point. I dropped into work today to sign some papers, find out about next week’s meetings, get my keys and to try to remember my work passwords etc.

I left the office and came home and just felt like crap…I may have shed a tear or two. Not because I don’t like my work. Not because I’m not ready to leave Hilary at day care with BIG sister Lilly. But because I had a moment of “What am I getting myself into” AND “Can I really do this job again”?

I feel under-qualified for the job.

I feel like the job is way beyond me.

I feel like I have no idea what I was getting into.

In reality, I’ve held the job for 5 years (minus 2 mat. leaves) and feel that I’ve done a good job in the past. I’ve never been told I’m doing something terribly wrong or that I’m not up to speed on current physical activity data.

After being off work for the last year, I’m not up to speed on current data and who know’s, I’ll probably make a few mistakes when I return. Just checking my email is a task in itself. I couldn’t even remember my username or password today. Thank God the tech support I talked to was super awesome and loved to talk about his 15 month old grandson….he made me happy.

I am slightly sad that I won’t get to spend ALL my time with my girl(s).

I am nervous about trying to get out the door, drop the girls off and to work on time.

I’m not looking forward to getting my girls on a new routine and the meltdowns that lie ahead of us.

My head space right now is what are we eating this week, when did Hilary nap, is the laundry clean in the washing machine, when is Lilly’s next play date, walk Maclean, is the fire still going and when did I workout last?

It’s not in work mode.

I know I’ll get there in the end. I know I’ll start absorbing the current data. I know I have a lot to learn (again). And I know it will all come back to me eventually.

But man, Shi*t hit really the fan yesterday.

Meatless Monday & Week #4 Meal Planning

It’s Week #4 of Meal Planning (Fall into Fitness Challenge) and also the first day of the Elf 4 Health Challenge! Today is “Meatless Monday” and our meal plans for this week look a little something like this:

Meal Planning Week #4:

Sunday: Vegan Sheppard’s Pie. It was delish!

Monday: Meatless Monday leftovers: Vegan Sheppard’s Pie or All Things Red Soup.

Tuesday: Sweet Chili.

Wednesday: Salmon, baked sweet potato and veggies.

Thursday: Mini Pizzas.

Friday: Vegan Waffles

Saturday: Hilary’s Birthday PARTY!!! The party is late afternoon so dinner will be health snacks/birthday cake and left overs from this week.

Since my husband is a vegan we have a lot of meatless meals. Sometimes when I want meat with our meal I just make it on the side for me and the girls…it’s easy to do and works for our family. I’ve posted a number of great vegan meals on my “Food Page”. Check them out for some great and easy meatless meals.

My favourites to make are:

Week 3 Meal Planning – How It Really Went!

Week #3 of my meal planning was by far the best week yet. I’ve learned that I need to start planning on Wednesday or Thursday for the following week. I start my planning for Sunday’s and end on Saturdays. When I don’t get around to planning our meals on the weekend it seems that I really suffer those first few days.  Lesson Learned I guess!

What I managed to do last week:

Sunday: Russian Chicken ~ No problem as all I had to do was take it out of the freezer, make rice and warm the chicken up on the stove. Win-Win for me!

Monday: Salmon, Baked Potatoes, Carrots, Pea’s. This by far is my favourite meal…I love salmon.

Tuesday: Mexican Baked Penne. Accomplished this task. It takes a while to make and makes SO MUCH that I’m able to freeze more than 1/2 the recipe. Sometimes, if I am organized I can split the recipe and make 1/2 vegan and 1/2 meat. Sounds like a lot of work but it’s really not that hard.

Wednesday: Chicken a-la-King with Basmati Brown Rice. Made this from scratch in-between nap time for Hilary and playing with her all day.

Thursday: All Things Red Soup. Easy to make and so good…even our toddler ate it!!! I have some frozen for work next week (lunches) and taking some out today!

Friday: Vegan Sheppard’s Pie. Didn’t happen. I was way to tired and didn’t want to make anything. Sai wasn’t home so I decided to have left overs. BEST. DECISION.EVER!

Saturday: Curried Cauliflower with Chic Peas  {vegan}. Made it while Sai played with the girls and it was devoured by three of us. Hilary just wasn’t into it 😉

A pretty successful week. Whoop Whoop!

On the fitness front – yoga has been creeping into my life one day at time….and another, and another! My legs are sure hoping for a run this week…even in this COLD weather we are having in Nova Scotia.  It’s supposed to be -7 but feels like -16 celsius is this morning!!!!! Yikes!

Week #4 meal planning is still a work in progress but I’ll share that with you later today.
