Runnin’, Runnin’, Running on a Treadmill

Yup! It’s official, we finally got our treadmill and I had my first run on the weekend! It was just what I needed.

Since my husband is away right now, my only running opportunities are at work during my lunch break or on our new treadmill. Before, I would have to either not run or do something else, like my trusty T25 or Jillian Michael’s DVD workouts. Don’t get me wrong, I love those workouts but I also love running and really wanting to improve my running this year.

Most people hate treadmills. Why run on a treadmill when you can simply go outside for a run? In fresh air, on any surface. Well, it’s not that simple in my life with two little girls and a husband that is away often. So, I welcome our treadmill with legs that just want to run.

Saturday night after I got the girls to bed, I quickly changed into my running gear so I wouldn’t back out. Just before 8 pm, I laced up my sneakers and hit start on “The Beast”. Sorry, treadmill – for now you are going to be called “the beast” until I can come up with a better name.

Me and "The Beast"

Me and “The Beast” before our “first run’.

My new running pants kinda look like a zebra…but they are not.  I really need a new name for my treadmill…”The Beast” just isn’t cutting it.

I walked for 3 minutes to give my body a chance to warm up and to be honest, for me to get organized. I had my water bottle, Sai’s Ipad, my cell (gotta take some selfies, I guess) and the baby monitor. I’m a Mama first, runner second. I was really nervous at how loud the treadmill would be and was praying that it wouldn’t wake up either girl.

I decided to watch Blue Bloods while I ran but it was difficult to hear the show even with the volume on high but it kept me distracted and focused. I kept my speed between 5 and 6 with a slight incline. It was great to be running but my left ankle was giving me some problems. It’s been a long, long time since I’ve had ankle issues so I’m hoping it was just a random thing.

I felt good during my run and was aiming to run for 30-35 minutes and managed to do that with only one short slow down to drink a little H2O – gotta hydrate people! By the end, I was pretty sweaty and satisfied…5k done just…like…that.  #MegsMiles

Apres 5k

Apres 5k. No the girls weren’t up, I just thought they looked pretty cute and wanted to balance out this college 😉

Sorry, Green Garmin I may have a new best friend 😉

Do you have a treadmill?

How do you make time to run and balance your life?

Do you name things; cars, treadmills, bikes?

  1. yay new treadmill! I rather like the name “the beast”. yes, I always name things. Car’s name is Ducky and my live baby christmas tree is Gertrude, who I’ve now nicknamed Gerty 🙂

  2. I hate running but I have been tackling the treadmill at the gym. My friends tell me I am going to start to love running. I’m still waiting for that to happen! Good for you for pushing yourself!!!

  3. I have a treadmill as well as other gym stuff like a weight machine and free weights. It is quite convenient I must admit. I have not name it though 😛
Having all I need to workout at home allows me to fit it easily into my schedule.. not to mention the money I save not going to a gym.

  4. I’ve thought about getting a treadmill but as I live in a basement flat, I’m worried that it might annoy the neighbours. As for naming things, I drive a red roadster called Robbie – yeah, I know, mid life crisis and all that. Loving the “Beast”, especially if s/he roars louder than the TV! 😀

  5. Ah the necessary evil of a treadmill. I have two (3.5 and 1) and twice a week in the winter it is a must (stroller when it’s warm). I hate it, but it’s nice, sort of… Be mindful of your form on the treadmill though. It’s totally unnatural and can gum up form and cause old injuries to be a bother. At least that’s what happens with me.

  6. I do have a treadmill and while I don’t love it for what it is, I love it because I’d rather run on a treadmill than not run at all. It’s really a must-have for running mamas, don’t you think?

  7. I have no idea how you run on the treadmill. I had to do 1 mile for the gait analysis and I nearly went insane. Some people love itI am not one of them.

I am having a hard time balancing things….I tend to let my lazy self take over The running group in my neighbourhood has really helped me stay accountable….and has been a great getting me outside over the winter.

So nice to ‘meet’ someone else from the Maritimes!

    • Since we just got the treadmill it’s still pretty fun and the only way I can get a run in when my husband is away. Not my first chose but I’ll take running on the treadmill over not running.

Yes, it’s nice to “meet” some other Maritime Bloggers. I may join one of your group runs one of these days as my family lives in Timberlea and we go there often to visit.

Thanks for stopping by the blog!

  8. I love the ‘Beast!’ That’s the best TM name yet…lol.

That is so cool you are in the valley! We go there from Halifax every year for the Valley Harvest run. I also watch Blue Bloods! 😀

    • It sure can be hard to back out of a workout when you already have the right clothing on! Ahh yes, maternity leave clothing….wasn’t that long ago for me 😉 I am finally getting used to my “work clothing” now 🙂
