Whipping windchill (-25c) and sunshine galore was how I ended the the week, not too shabby. It was a beautiful but wind-whipping cold day at the hill yesterday but we had a blast!
Right now for me, life is all about balance. Balance of activities I enjoy doing (running, soccer, yoga, skiing, barre, cycling) and daily life of work and family. Oh life can be fun: water problems last week, kids not listening to you and kids learning the hard way. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose but you keep moving forward.
Last year I became an Active for Life ambassador and this month they are kicking off an “Active for Life 30 Day” challenge. Today is all about hopping and Wednesday is about balance. Hopping on one foot or both feet. Hopping down your hallway, to your car/school or the bus stop!
Balance is not about life balance like I was speaking about but physical balance – balancing on a rope, wire or piece of tape on the floor. This balance is all about physical literacy. What’s physical literacy? Well, the definition I use is about children (or adults) moving confidently and competently in a variety of activities and settings and building their fundamental movement skills (hopping, running, jumping, kicking, throwing, balancing etc.). If you can’t run, how do you can you play soccer, basketball or baseball?
Today, I’ve set up a piece of tape in our hallway floor that we will leave all week – maybe longer. Sometimes after birthday parties I will leave the hop scotch painters tape on the floor. I did this by mistake one time and caught the girls doing hop scotch to their bedrooms at night. So sometimes we leave it their for some last minute play time.
Hopping
Back to today, I know the girls will wake up and say “what?” but I figure it’s way to use this simple piece of tape and fun. Though my husband will be sleeping after his night shift (Paramedic), I’m going to see if they can hop quietly down the hallway to breakfast and then hop to the car later. When we get home at the end of the day, they can hop all they want before dinner is ready back and forth on the line, one foot, two feet or maybe even with their eyes close.
Note the large cardboard box is actually a cardboard car and the water bottles on the ground were for glow bowling (glow stick in water) from New Years! Yes, that’s how we roll…we don’t throw out anything and apparently don’t clean up New Year’s Eve supplies either.
Last week’s workouts:
- Monday: Rest day. (Ran 7k the night before).
- Tuesday: Yoga class.
- Wednesday: Rest day.
- Thursday: Soccer game (we lost).
- Friday: Rest day.
- Saturday: SURVIVAL day with my girls, they were a handful!
- Sunday: Skiing for about 6 hours with my girls.
Skiing was amazing! Our youngest finally learned how to ski 100% on her own!!! I usually ski down back wards with my arm out towards her chest to slow her down but after two runs she was just ready to go on her own. We worked on stopping and starting and she quickly learned how to use her legs to turn.
It was like a switch went off…you know, her physical literacy switch in skiing (putting pressure on your skis to slow down and stop and balancing. She skied for hours and by the end of the day had to lay down on the hill more so out of exhaustion then anything else. She was loving life!
Lilly did six runs on the big hill and challenged herself to doing new runs that scared her. Funny enough, after being scare the first time, she went back and did it a second time!
How was your weekend?
Ever set up painters tape on your floor for your kids to use?
Have you ever done a family challenge life Active for Life’s 30 Day Challenge?
Today, I’m joining for the Weekly Wrap hosted by HoHo Runs and MissSippiPiddlin.
The painters tape is so cute! I would love to go skiing. I love the mama skis and the kiddo skis picture!
The tape is still down and they are still using it! Simple things keep them entertained sometimes!
Thanks 🙂
Your house sounds like a lot of fun! It is so cool to see things “click” for our kids. Skiing is so fun!
It is fun to see things “click” for our kids!
How fun that everyone can ski now! I used to ski all the time when I was younger–I can’t remember the last time I went! I’d probably be scared now…
You’ll have to go skiing again one day to remember that feeling!
Congrats to Lilly! I’m so glad skiing was fun despite the biting cold. Physical literacy: I love that term and I love the idea of putting together challenges. Sounds fun!
They had a blast skiing!
Skiing is so much fun! I love that it’s an outdoor activity that the whole family can do together!
I love that our whole family can go skiing together!
The tape is a great idea! My balance is worlds better (thanks to yoga) but still needs lots of work. I might have to tape a line down my hallway…..r
I have a long way to go with my balance but yoga is definitely helping!
Way to go Lilly! How awesome. I’d love to take my kids skiing sometime – but I haven’t done it myself in 20 years! You sound like you have a very fun house! Kudos!
You should take your kids skiing…it will come back to you very fast!
Sounds like such a fun week! I love the hopping and glowstick bowling. We haven’t done that one at home but we did it at a party once. Super fun!
The glow stick blowing was a lot of fun, something we’d do again!
I used to love going skiing with my kids when they were little. Sounds like it was very cold though!
I sure am loving skiing with my girls, it gets better every time we go!
What a fun challenge!!
It was a fun challenge!
That tape is such a great idea! Sounds like you guys had a great time skiing!
We sure did!
I love the tape idea! I bet little man would get a huge kick out of that.
I would love to try to take him skiing. Mr PugRunner blew out his knee the last time he went, and I haven’t been since I was maybe 10, but it would be fun to give it a go.
Ski injuries are horrible! The tape idea is a tone of fun!
I’ve never been skiing but it looks like a lot of fun! The hopping and balancing sounds like something I need to work on myself!
Skiing is amazing! You’ll have to give it a try some day!
I’m not sure my kids would even notice the tape LOL, but they are tw/teens. Sounds like you had a blast skiiing.
Our girls noticed the tape right away and figured out what to do with it! They loved it!
The painters tape is a great idea. Great use of resources!
I use painters tape for lots of things – especially their art work on walls!
Geez it is cold there! I love the hopping idea! I wish I had learned to ski when I was a kid- they are fierceness and learn so quickly. I tried a couple of years ago and it was too frustrating and scary! Love the pictures! Have a great week!
It sure was cold out here! It’s starting to warm up a bit but still below 0.
