261 Fearless: Inspirational Women

With March being Women’s History Month, I was asked to write a post about an inspiring female in my life (as part of the 261 Fearless Ambassadorship). I sometimes find this one hard as I feel like I have many inspiring females in my life not just one. Can I narrow it down?

So I thought about it a little more. Who really inspires me and why? Who motivates me? Who do I look to when struggling or facing a challenge? Who is that person? Or Who are those women?

Who is an inspirational female in my life?

Growing Up.

As a child, I grew up playing soccer. Soccer in the back yard, summer team, indoor soccer, competitive soccer and recreational soccer when competitive soccer wasn’t available. Mia Hamm was inspiring to me as I saw her as a strong, talented and successful female when I was this little kid. I LOVED soccer growing up. If I wasn’t at the soccer field, there was a good chance I was playing soccer at home or training (fartleks, speed work and long runs).

She was a role model for me. To be completely honest back then I didn’t even know any Canadian female soccer players, so she stood out for me.

Canadian Athletes.

As years have gone on, I’ve come to seek out Canadian athletes mainly through the Olympics as I want to know who they are. I want to know who our future leaders are going to be. I want to be able to list off female athletes as easily as I can male athletes. Over the years Clara Hughes (Cycling & Speed Skating), Heather Moyse (Bobsledder) and of course Christine Sinclair (Soccer) have been inspiring. All Olympic athletes, all with a story to tell and all with determination and dedication to their respective sports.

They are inspiring because of their success in sport but also in their success off the field/ice etc. They have become motivational speakers, mental health promoters and visible in the communities/country making an impact on the younger generations of females in sport.

Work Related

Over the last few years, I’ve had the luxury of working with success women in the sport, recreation and physical activity fields. I’ve learned from their leadership roles, their confidence and their passion. It’s made me think about how I want to be seen in a leadership role, how I want to be more confident and live my passion through my work. PS – I love what I do.

I’ve also been really lucky to work alongside many of my University classmates and friends who are doing amazing things within their work/positions. As they succeed, they inspire me. For those locally who read my blog, I’m talking about Dawn S, Kerry C, Gabby G, Rachel B., you gals inspire me.


Who inspires me currently: Friends & Other Moms. My mom, my friends who are mom’s, bloggers I’ve gotten to “know” online. Seeing them balance work, single parenting, children, passions, training for races, challenges and obstacles is pretty inspiring. It’s also inspiring to know I’m not alone in this parenting world and other Mom’s have suggestions to share.

Running bloggers who share amazing tips, things to try, food recipes to eat and support when you are down and injured. A few inspiring female running bloggers: Suz, Kyla, Heather, Helly, and Michelle.

Local female runners also inspire me. When they share their run social media or in a twitter chat, it’s inspiring, it’s motivating and exciting to see how they are succeeding. It’s also inspiring when someone asks to run with you because they know you like to run.

So, no I can’t say that I have one female that is inspiring to me. I simply cannot narrow my list down. I’m lucky to have so many inspiring females cross my path and motivate me along the way.

Best of 2015 in Running

Though it wasn’t a big year of running but it sure was an adventure that had it’s up’s and downs. Obviously, the hamstring injury was the low point which too over 9 most of the year but I ended with some fun races.

Last year I did a “Best of 2014 Running” and thought I’d do it again. This year it’s hosted by Eat Pray Run DC. I’ve added some “other” pieces to the questions.

Best Race Photo & Best Race Experience: Pacing 10k Valley Harvest

I’ve never used a pace bunny before at a race so I’m not sure what drove me to sign up to be one but I’m sure happy I did. Through White Rabbit Pacing, I paced the 1:10 – 10k finish and managed a 1:09:59 finish time.

I was super nervous going into it as I was just getting my foot back to normal after it’s brief encounter with injury. I did a few practice runs and took some time to figure out pacing with my Garmin which was a life saver.

Though the winds was rough, this was the first time I loved running the 10k at Valley Harvest Marathon as I normally dislike one long open section. This year that part of the route was filled with runners around me, high fives and good chats with people I’ve never met before.

I absolutely loved pacing and planning on doing it again in 2016!

Best Volunteering Experience: Maritime Race Weekend

THIS RACE! This race was supposed to be my “come back” race but it was not. Luckily, I was able to volunteer handing out medals to finishers both Friday night (5k) and Saturday (all distances).

This race is one of the best races in Nova Scotia. The excitement around the race year round is vibrant. It’s the race that encourages everyone to participate whether you are a runner or not. It’s the race that gives back to community groups. It’s the race that you don’t want to miss!


I had a lot of fun volunteering, meeting new people, seeing friends finish their races. It an event that your running friends/communities come together. It’s a must do and I’m all ready signed up for September 2016!

Best Run: PEI Half Marathon

This by far was my best run of the year. My 3rd half marathon and one I was super nervous about. I didn’t know how my hamstring would hold up but new to keep moving forward and take it all in.

My goal was a 6:30/km pace and I set my Garmin to 6:20 pace. I finished in 2:13:28. Not my best time but not my worst either; it was the exact time that I needed it to be. Though my hamstring was fine running, I’d later be in pain for a week due to not stretching properly – lesson learned.

Best New Piece of Gear: 

I don’t really have a favourite new piece of running gear but I sure did love my pink Asics that my husband picked up from me.

Maintenance and cross training is key for good running. You can run all you want but if you don’t work the muscles the propel you to run – you remain injured. ~from my physiotherapist

Race Experience You’d Repeat in a Heartbeat:

Pacing with White Rabbit Pacing. Hands down, I loved this and hoping to do so again next fall.

Worst Running Moment: Hamstring Injury.

On December 10th 2014, I pulled my hamstring playing soccer and figured it was just a normal minor injury. I took some time off, not enough clearly and waited a full month to seek out treatment – lessened learned: seek treatment ASAP. Just because you’ve pulled muscle many many times before doesn’t always mean it’s the same.

This injury sidelined me until June, though I was running a little I was still in lots of pain until June…until I saw a Sports Physiotherapist and he got me back on track. I was going great until I somehow injured my cuboid bone that took me out of another race.

Injuries suck.

Your Year in Three Words: Frustrating. Motivating. Driven.

Frustrating – yes because I was in so much pain with my injury and doing everything I was told to do.

Motivating – being supported by family, friends, bloggers, social media friends and at races.

Driven – well, I guess my motto is just never give up.

Though 2015 didn’t start off great it definitely got a lot better!

261 Fearless Ambassador!

One of the things I love about blogging are the people I meet. When I say meet, it can be on their blog, an individual who comments or someone who I meet at a race who follow’s my blog. It’s fun when people say “oh, I read your blog”...though I get a little shy talking about it, it’s fun to meet some of you in person.

Recently, I became a 261 Fearless Ambassador. To me, this is really exciting. Originally, I started this blog to keep myself accountable to workouts while my husband was away at school. It’s morphed into weekly training updates, multiple injury updates, some adventures with our girls and honest posts of how I manage and not manage to balance my life.


What does 261 stand for?

Well, it was Kathrine Switzer’s bib number when she ran the Boston Marathon in 1967 as the first women to do so! With her attempts to run Boston, she almost had her bib ripped off her by the race director at the time! Could you imagine???

She was a pioneer in getting women into the Boston Marathon officially and also getting women into the Olympics for running. She’s changed the way women participated in running. Did you know there are places in the world that women can’t run!

I’ve been an active person my whole life. Soccer was and still is my first love. I played badminton and did fairly well with it. I loved the three years I played school volleyball and even the 1 year I was manager of the basketball team. I was terrible at basketball but was able to be apart of the team as the manager.

I’ve never sat on any Provincial Sport Boards, or any boards for that matter – though it’s on my bucket list of things I want to do. However, with my blog and this opportunity to be an ambassador, I’m hoping to be a voice of encouragement, of support and a role model for other women. Don’t get me wrong men, you are just as important BUT … you’ve always had the right to participate in sport. Women didn’t!!! To be honest, I feel lucky to be living now because sport has taken me in a direction I never imagined and for that I am grateful.

Training Update for PEI Half Marathon

Alright, I’m ready for this…well, as ready as I’m going to be with my most recent injuries. I finally managed a long run on the weekend without my foot taped and woke up the next day with no pain when I walked. I’m loosely using my last training plan to continue getting ready for my 21.1 run on Oct 18th.

If you are new to my blog, here is a quick update: After finishing week #10 of training {you can read that here}, I woke up with a sore foot. Had an x-ray – nothing broken so a took 5 days off running. Attempted a long run and massive pain again – had another x-ray – nothing broken but was told I sprained my foot. I missed my MRW Half Marathon due to this injury as was not a happy runner. I got my foot taped while at physio for my hamstring; physiotherapist thought it was my Cuboid bone. So, I’ve had my foot taped for the last few weeks and just started running last Thursday with no tape.

What was Planning VS What Really Happened

  • Monday: Rest Day Ripped in 30 Level 3 
  • Tuesday: Rest DayRest Day
  • Wednesday: 5k6k Outside 
  • Thursday: 8k8k Treadmill Run
  • Friday: Rest DayNailed it!
  • Saturday: 12-14k Long Run – 15k Long Run
  • Sunday: Cross TrainingRipped in 30 Level 4. My arms were so wobbly after (for hours!).

Saturday’s long run was to run 12 – 14 k to test out my foot. Last minute I wrote my running buddy who was busy getting ready for her daughter’s 3rd birthday party and asked her if she wanted to do a long run together early in the morning. She said sure!

We met around 6:30 AM just as the sun was starting to lighten up the sky. The plan was to run out 7k and turn back. She was going to run a few extra kilometres after we finished the 12-14k. We ran out 7.5 km as there is a garbage bin at that location and we wanted to dump our GU packages there rather than carry them.

My legs felt great. I struggled a lot on the way back. My quads were really challenged. My hamstring was probably cold from me wearing short-shorts. We chatted a lot and every once in a while I’d say “I’m going to struggle here”, so we’d slow down. Mainly, that was on a hill or L-O-N-G incline. We walked and talked some more.

Have to admit – I’m pretty happy with my time/pace.

It was a hard run but a great run…just what I needed. My foot felt great during the run but a little off later that day. It was not painful or bad at all. Sunday, my foot felt great for most of the day. At this point, I just feel like I have a sore ankle (not cuboid bone) so I’m hoping to strengthen the muscles in my foot/around my foot over the next few weeks. Gotta get my wobble board out, oh I mean, take it away from the girls since they play on it!

And yes, later that afternoon we enjoyed birthday cake!

I’m feeling: Fairly content with my running this week. It was all about running pain-free.

Only TWO weeks until the Valley Harvest 10k (pacing 1:10 finish) and THREE WEEKS until PEI Half Marathon! I’m back to getting nervous!
