Treats, Run & Fire Weekly Wrap Up

November has been an extremely busy month and it’s only the 6th! We are still having some summer like temperatures but fall feels like it’s trying to roll in. The pretty leaves are all gone and the warm temps just don’t feel right.

Last week wasn’t the best week of workouts as I was on the road a lot with work. That will be the theme until mid December sadly. I need to be creative in getting in my runs and any other workouts.

Last week’s workouts:

  • Monday: Rest Day.
  • Tuesday: Halloween – lots of walking.
  • Wednesday: Melissa Bender Quick Core workout.
  • Thursday: 5k with Carmacks.
  • Friday: Rest Day.
  • Saturday: 3k run with Carmacks before 7am.
  • Sunday: Leisurely 6k bike ride + Soccer Game.

Halloween: Social Butterfly, Super women and Old Lady Lilly!

Confession – I’m eating way too many Halloween treats. Anyone else? I am however enjoying my runs with Carmacks. He is doing awesome running with me or should I say I’m doing a good job of running with him. I ran’t run fast enough for him right now but some days he has me pushing my pace way more then I want to be and that’s okay. My husband had him out yesterday for another 5k so he’s starting to rack up the mileage. I want to try and do a longer run with him and see how he does but it’s still a little too warm for him to go longer then 5k – at least, that’s how I feel.

(TMI coming up). I’ve gotta figure out how do my long runs with him and managed water for both of us as well as poop bags which aren’t fun to run with. There aren’t too many garbage bins around to drop the bags off and I’m not going to leave a bag of dog poop behind. I have lots to learn about running long distances with him as when I ran with our other dog Maclean, we kept it to 5k.

This week I also tried a Melissa Bender core workout I recently saw online. Not easy but so effective. I worked this past weekend but it was fun work. I graphically recorded an AGM for a female leadership group around sport, recreation and physical activity. You can check it out on Instagram. It was a long day driving and standing but I took advantage of my new Tiux socks to keep my legs happy. [Tiux promo code: ANNASTIUX for 20% off at Tiux]

We got out for one last bike ride as a family. I keep saying “last ride” but each week we managed to get out again. However, this week required gloves and the girls faces were cold but they still loved it.

We ended off the weekend with a bonfire dinner for the girls. It went over pretty good until Hilary had a meltdown over her spider hot dog – apparently she really hates hot dogs! At least the fire was fun! The time change took a little toll on Hilary as she was up before the birds and cranky by 5pm…fire burning time. Oh well, sometimes as parents we learn things last minute – you know….good Ah – ha! moments!

I didn’t get to watch the NYC Marathon but WOW, just WOW. I’m loving all the hype of Shalene’s win. No, I’m not American but it’s awesome watching a women win and break a record for her country. I’m linking up today with the Weekly Wrap hosted by HoHo Runs and MissSippiPiddlin.

Accountability & Weekly Workouts

A week or so ago I joined a group online that was going to keep me accountable to strength training. You know, you state what you plan to do for the week, do it and share it on the Facebook group page.

Well, all is dandy and I was trekking along and when it came time for my specific strength training session – Iron Strength – I totally bailed out. On top of that, I haven’t check in with the group since then because I totally bailed on that workout. Bad group member here!!!

All is well though as I got back on track the next few days after that missed workout. Some days you just can’t do it all. I have those days once a week or every two weeks. You become burnt out, exhausted from dealing with your day that working out at night just is too much. I know, I know, I can workout first thing in the morning or at lunch time but that doesn’t always work out for me either. It’s a challenging balance.

Last week’s workouts:

  • Monday: Ran 5k with Carmacks.
  • Tuesday: Missed my Iron Strength workout – whoops!
  • Wednesday: Soccer Game + 3k running.
  • Thursday: Planned to do Yoga but we got home really late.
  • Friday: Walked Carmacks for 3k.
  • Saturday: Ran 8k with Krystol.
  • Sunday: 6k Leisurely Cycling & 2 walks with Carmacks (2k)

Monday night I ran with Carmacks while both girls were at Girl Guides. Carmacks is our retired sled dog and boy can he run! Tuesday I was just exhausted from my day and bailed on my workout last minute and went to be early.

Wednesday was super warm here and I had a soccer game at 8pm; we won 4-2. When I got home I went for a little 3k run since I was already sweaty, I figured why not. My legs were heavy from all that sprinting but it was a good run.

Thursday and Friday didn’t allow for much of anything as I was on the road both days. As Friday night approached, I wrote my running buddy Krystol and we decided to go for a run Saturday morning together. She hadn’t run in three weeks and I really needed some motivation to get out the door.

We planned to run between 7 and 10k and managed 8k together before calling it a day. We also may have agreed to start training for the hypo half in January. Guess we should get on a training plan.

Sunday was spent walking the dog twice, cleaning the house (vacuum/mopping), book store purchase, mowing the lawn and a fun bike ride. My girls and I walked Carmacks at 8:30am with jackets, hats and mittens while at 3pm we were in shorts and a t-shirt riding our bikes for just under an hour. Crazy weather we are having in Nova Scotia! Picture_20171030_143621066[1]

Though I skipped a workout or two, it was still an active week so I can’t complain! Now just to be more engaged in the accountability group to keep me going.

Have you ever trained for a race you aren’t going to register for until last minute? Due to weather conditions like snow/ice?

How was your week/weekend?

Anyone committed to an accountability group or monthly challenge in November?

Friday Five – What’s Happening Right Now

Happy Friday!!!!!! I’m sure all those teachers who started back this week are happy to see Friday on their calendar (I would be). I love weekends because it means that I get to spend time with my family…and not at work. Don’t get me wrong, I like my job but I love spending time with my family more.

I’m going to hook up today with the Friday Five’s but not write about food. I’m going to write about five things happening right now.

friday-five

  1. Back to School started and was a great success. Lilly was really excited about her new teacher but more importantly seeing her friends. I asked her a bunch of questions last night and she was the most excited for the reading corner in her classroom! Apparently it has a large mat with the alphabet and 1 pillow with more to follow. Little things are big things.
  2. Bike Rides & Outdoors: I’m hoping to get out for a few bike rides this weekend since it actually made my ankle feel better when I went Sunday & Monday. Its’ been a pretty sad state for me these days. Contemplating workouts but just not having the motivation to even get in my workout clothing. The girls having been riding their bikes again so I’m hoping we get to take them on the trail…you know, change it up from riding their bikes on our street.
  3. Family: I’m looking forward to spending the weekend with my family. It’s rare that we get a whole weekend together. I’m sure we’ll even watch some of the Paralympics too (have you seen those athletes – woah!).
  4. Running: I want to run, that’s no surprise! I may or may not go for a run in the next few days. I am going to run my double race at Maritime Race weekend but still on the fence between 5k or 10k on the Saturday. I’m thinking 5k since I’ll be running 5k the night before but so tempted by the 10k course 🙂 I have until Thursday to decide.
  5. Canva: I just discovered this website through some other bloggers. See the picture above…way cooler then I’ve done before! Look it up, you’ll love it!

Thanks to Courtney from Eat Pray Run DC, Mar from Mar on the Run, and Cynthia from You Signed Up For What?! for hosting the Friday Five’s!

I’m posting more over on Instagram these days and even opened up a second account that is just me and the family…almost no running photos (shocker, I know!).

What’s happening right now for you? Back to school for your kids, training for a race, racing this weekend, spending time with family, loving the weather lately?

Have a great weekend!

What I’ve Been Wearing Lately #SweatBetter

I’m not a big fashionista or anything but I would say that I do enjoy some fun workout gear and clothing. Having said that, I’ve been wearing a few new things lately on my runs, bike rides and just in general, every day.

If you follow me on Instagram, you might notice I’ve been sporting some new things like the Polar A300 Activity Tracker. I’m also recently wore the grey Under Armour Run tank on a hot afternoon run (below). The word”run”on the front is reflective (safety bonus) and Under Armour HeatGear® long shorts.

July 2nd Run Polar

I’m a big fan of longer shorts to avoid any chaffing because let’s be honest – it happens. And it happens to women’s legs more then not! The shorts are super comfortable and I’m thinking I want to go back to SportChek and get another pair so I can run in them more then my short-shorts.

The Polar A300 has been a fun addition and I’m still in the process of figuring it all out. Just when I think I know what I’m doing, I hit another button or sync it to the app on my phone and wham-o …it does even more! I’ll talk more about that next week.

Even though I took two weeks off running, it didn’t mean I wasn’t still active. Between playing soccer, coaching, going to yoga class and getting out on my bike, I still got to wear a few more things!

When the Nike Free RN sneakers arrived I had to wear them to work as I couldn’t just leave them at home to sit all day. They fit like a glove! I was super nervous about running in them as I didn’t think they’d give me enough support. As well as, I’m super cautious about getting injured. After wearing them at work for a few days and around the house, I knew they would become my go-to shoes when I’m not in sandals this summer.

Anna S Wear to Work

They are super light weight and again, fit like a glove. I finally tested them out on a run recently and was really surprised (I’m not just saying that). As I started my run, I couldn’t even hear them on the pavement. You know when you hear runners hitting the ground really hard in a race, that’s all I could think of and how quiet these were. They felt great on the road, then in the woods/trails, crusher dust trail and then back on the road again. I love the colours too.

A while back I wore my Nike Run “There Is No Finish Line” tank which is a bit more of a muscle shirt and something I’m not used to wearing. I did like how comfortable it was and enjoyed the change in style for my workouts. Plus it can show off my fun-coloured sports bras underneath which isn’t something I’d normally do either 😉

There is No Finish Line.jpgThat’s what I’ve been wearing lately during my workouts. It’s so nice to finally have summer weather to wear lots of tanks and get new summer tan lines and a few more freckles, ha ha! I’ll share a little more next week.

All opinions in this blog post are my own thoughts and experiences. These products have been provided as part of the summer SportChek Ambassador program.  Thank you SportChek!

Biking, Curriculum and Running

*crickets chirping*

I’m still here! Just took a few days off from blogging, no reason at all other then I just needed some down time and it’s been a busy week.

Monday night I managed to get in a 16k bike ride……..

bike Sept 14

Tuesday, Lilly’s school {yeah, she started school this year} had curriculum night. So Sai and I went and learned about what she is doing in class and how they are meeting their curriculum outcomes. It was a date night 😉

Wednesday I rode my bike for 13k (50 minutes). Sai bought me a light for my bike which is coming in handy as it’s getting darker earlier. Man, my legs do not like biking but I sure do. Or maybe I’m just working them too hard since I can’t run. Either way, this bike riding gig is kinda fun…minus the bugs in the face.

Today, I had another physio appointment and was told to increase my running distance: start with 7k and if my foot was good to run 10k on the weekend. The hamstring is feeling really great. My 10k race {Pace Bunny for the 1:10} is still on the table as is my PEI Half Marathon Oct 18th…. fingers crossed I’m good to go!

I’m planning on running tonight on the treadmill or maybe I’ll clean the bath tubs? It’s a toss-up!

That’s it, short and quick for today! Back to normal blogging soon.

Are you loving or hating the sun going down fast these nights?

How’s your week going?

Vote now: should I run on the treadmill or clean the bath tubs?

Triathlon of life with two littles

No, I haven’t participated in a Triathlon but life sure makes it feel like we have 🙂 We’ve been busy this last week and I feel like we’ve done a mini triathlon with our girls. A little biking {Lilly} one evening, a trip to the Zoo (walking/running) one morning and the end of Lilly’s little soccer. Don’t worry, we’ve been running too 🙂

Move It Challenge

It’s been a while since I’ve shared a challenge on the blog…not my challenges but other challenges that I’ve done, attempted, failed, crushed, surprised myself, hated and loved.

So…here’s the “Move It Challenge” By Jodi Higgs: Facebook Source.
