Early Morning Run – Global Running Day.

Last September I was getting up at stupid o’clock…aka 5am to get my runs in. It could have been a 5k, 6k or 8k training run. It really didn’t matter the distance, I’d get up to run it and I feel in love with EARLY morning runs.

I found it really hard to get up but I have a dog that loves to run whenever and my husband was always getting up at that time of day for work. I started taking advantage of that time to get our dog active and my training runs in.

Being injured the last few months allowed me to get super lazy, Haha. Seriously though, it allowed me to crave those early morning runs….well any run really. I figured it was time to get back to it now that it’s light out at 5am here.

So, today was the day. Global running day was a good motivator and again, I had to walk my dog. I did a 1k loop of mostly walking my dog till he pooped, then we ran the rest of the way home, about a 1/2 km.

I ran my semi regular route with a little change up to try and keep it somewhat flat except for that one BIG incline. I found I wasn’t struggling like I have been lately. My fitness is B-A-D. Really bad but I’m not letting that stop me.

This coming weekend I should be pacing the 10k (1:20) time but because I got injured ack in April, I had to back out. Not going to lie, I’ve got some BIG FOMO going on and trying to limit my social media time so I don’t get too sad I’m not pacing it. I really love pacing races. I’ll be keeping myself busy this weekend with my daughters soccer games in Truro and then possibly a family cycling event Sunday.

Anyway, I got my 5k run in this morning just after 5:30am. Man, I was sluggish starting out but woke up quickly as I got moving. I almost had a progression run but was off by 10-15 seconds. I’m not paying attention to my Garmin when I run right now but going by how I feel, so I wasn’t paying attention.

My calf muscle feels awesome and I’m still doing my PT exercise for a while longer. Almost 100% cleared…well hopefully in 2 weeks time.

Anyone else run today for the Global running day?

Early bird runner or no, just No?

Wintry Morning Runs

Never thought I’d say this but wintry morning runs seem to be my thing lately!

I like to walk my dog before my husband leaves for work so that I don’t have to walk him with my girls before they go to school, and I to work. They aren’t overly enthused in the mornings to begin with. So telling them they have to walk Carmacks with me in freezing cold temps doesn’t always go over well.

This morning I was awake around 5am for no reason. I tried desperately to fall back to sleep but when my husband’s alarm went off at 5:30am, I figured I’d just get up then too.

It took me 30 minutes to pull myself together but Carmacks and I started our run at 6am. So close to the #5at5am club but I’ll take the 6am start time. He was pumped as he always is. Running in the snow is his thing! I swear he’d live outside again if we lived outside but that’s not happening.

Off we went, only running into one other dog and it’s owner. Carmacks cried to say hello but we kept going. Up and down the slippery snowy streets in the dark of the morning. Some people still had their Christmas lights on so that was fun to see.

We finished off our run with a morning chat with my neighbour before heading inside. Carmacks is all business when he gets back….feed me, feed me and then rest. I’m more like a sloth….slowly stretching, taking off my gear, saying hi to the girls and then off to the shower before the real day starts.

Right now I’m enjoying these early morning runs even with the cold temps and snow under-footing. It also means I don’t have to run tonight after the 2nd Christmas Concert this week!

Also it’s my 7th blog-anniversary! Wow….seven years with this blog!!!

Are you all ready for the holidays?

Are you into early morning runs this winter?

Anyone else have Christmas Concerts this week?

Work, Run, Shop, Repeat

With Christmas fast approaching, I’m feeling like I’m not ready for it yet but don’t worry I’m still getting in my running! Priorities….priorities.

Just kidding….well, I’m kinda not. With two birthdays at the beginning of December in our house, it’s hard to think past those and to Christmas sometimes. Weekends are packed with basketball games times two and soon to be ski trips to the hill. We have Christmas parties (hosting) and basketball jamborees this coming weekend – at least we got our tree up last weekend. I’m ready for Christmas break just to do nothing, ha!

As for gifts, I’m mostly done shopping but feeling like I don’t have “enough”. Not that my kids/husband need all kinds of stuff but I just don’t feel ready. Baking hasn’t even been planned though I’m pinning a tone of vegan cookie recipes lately.

Work is still in full speed which isn’t normal this time of year for us. The good news is that I’m still running, playing soccer and hitting up yoga class when my work schedule permits. I’m really loving yoga after running early in the morning. It’s a nice change mid day!

I seem to be getting into a pattern of early morning runs on Tuesday’s. I’m not sure why. It could be the fact that my husband works that day and if he’s getting up at 5:30….I’m awake too (just can’t sleep thorough it). It’s also the best time for me to get up and walk our dog before he leaves for work. And well, since we have a retired sled dog…..he kinda loves to run!

Carmacks and I have been running 1-2 times a week and sometimes my husband takes him on his runs. Carmacks is racking up the mileage right now. Clearly, the picture below is not in the early morning hours but after one of our muddy runs a few weeks back.

I’ve even managed one run recently with my running buddy Krystol!!!!! We can just never seem to get our schedules to align but last weekend we did. It was bitterly cold…like -11c but felt like -18c. The plan was 7-8k and I called it at 5k. You win some you lose some but at least we got out together!

Anyone else feeling not “ready” for Christmas?

COLD weather runner or not?

Any early morning runners here? Raise your hand!

Week 9 Half Training MRW

What a week of running! This might be my first week (of 9) that I actually did all the running!!!!

What was Planned vs What Really Happened:

Monday: Stretch & Strengthen | Rest Day. I was done after four games of soccer on the weekend.

Tuesday: 8k | 8k morning run! I still can’t believe I managed this before work.

Wednesday: 5k | 5k. Another morning run done before work!

Thursday: 5k + Strengthening | 5k + SUP Yoga! Yup, another morning run before work AND I went to my first ever SUP Yoga class! I was super nervous about falling in the water but also because I didn’t know anyone going. Apparently,  my desire to try the sport trumped the desire to have a friend go with me. It was so much fun and I didn’t fall in. At the end of the class I even managed to hold a crow pose!

Friday: Rest Day | Rest Day. FAVOURITE. DAY. OF. THE. WEEK!

Saturday: 15k Race | 18k Long Run. I was up early and hit the road by 5:47am and managed to finish my run in 2:00:02! It was really cool out and I was nervous I wasn’t dress warm enough but once again, you warm up once you get going.

It was an out and back kind of run with a few little spin offs into subdivisions and random roads. I was kinda hoping I’d be able to finish around 2 hours and when I was 2.5k from home I picked up my pace as I though I had just enough time. The last .3/km was uphill which wasn’t smart to finish on but I pushed it hard through the last few hundred meters.

Sunday: Soccer Game|Rest day. I had to miss my soccer game as we were busy with two family parties: one celebrating my Mom’s 70th and another send off party for my brother and SIL as they are posted to another Province 😦

Weekly Mileage: 36km running, 1 SUP Yoga class. No soccer.

This was probably my best week of running and I’m really loving my early morning runs. This week coming will be a little all over the place as I’m on vacation and have an appointment with the Osteopath on Monday to sort out my back, SI joint and hip flexor, which means 2 days of rest (no activity).

How was your week?

Ever try SUP or SUP Yoga?

Are you into early morning runs or another time?
