Hemp Protein Smoothie Review

Through Fit Approach, I’ve been given the opportunity to test out lots of Manitoba Hemp products: hemp hearts, hemp bars and more recently hemp protein smoothie powder.

I’ll be completely honest, I’m normally not a protein power person so I wasn’t sure if I really wanted to review something that I generally don’t use on a regular basis. I was hesitant. Once selected for the review I figured I’d give it a go and give my honest opinion. Please note these opinions are my own.

Flavours: Mixed Berry, Vanilla Chai and Chocolate. I’m not a Vanilla Chai person so I wasn’t sure if I’d like that to begin with. We’ve been having LOTS of smoothies for breakfast each morning and I’ve been adding the Hemp Protein Smoothie Powder in.

hemp heart protein.jpg

The first morning I put the suggested amount of 4 tablespoons in and gave the smoothie to Lilly and she disliked it. I wasn’t bothered by it like she was but wasn’t sure that was the right amount of powder vs smoothie stuff. Over the next few days I played with the ratio and like 2-3 tablespoons vs 4.

I made a smoothie for my husband with the Vanilla Chai and he loved it. I tried it and wasn’t in love with it so lucky for him, he get’s to have that one to himself. I think one of the things I like about this product is that it’s vegan but that’s not their focus. With Saï being a vegan it can be a challenge to find products for him. All three flavours are vegan.

After my hard IronStrength workout on Monday, I decided to test out the chocolate hemp protein power with some chocolate milk/almond milk. I really loved it. This one is my favourite and I can see myself using it over and over. It wasn’t grainy, mixed really well; especially when you put the cap on right…ha ha yeah, I made a little mess.

Product Information:

Manitoba Harvest is launching a new smoothie product that combines HempPro 70 protein powder, organic harvest greens (spinach, kale and broccoli). Proteins and Greens!!! Each 30 gram serving has 15 grams of plant-based protein and is slightly sweetened with organic coconut sugar. You mix it with 12 oz of fruits/veggies for a smoothie or dairy/non-dairy like drink.

What I liked/disliked about it:

Pros:

  • Vegan
  • Chocolate flavour
  • Not grainy (at all!)
  • Easy to store in reusable bags
  • It has kale, spinach and broccoli in it, gotta get those greens in some how.
  • There website has recipes for baking with it…ummm, hello, yes please!

Cons:

  • Really didn’t like the Vanilla Chai flavour (though my husband did).
  • Would love to be able to buy it in my local grocery store where their other products are for sale.

Would I buy it on my own?

I would buy the chocolate hemp protein smoothie again for sure. The other two, I’d leave the Vanilla Chai for my husband and the Mixed Berry as a back up. If you are looking for something new to try out, I recommend giving the Manitoba Hemp Protein Smoothie a try.

Wanna try it? Here’s a code for you to get 15% off: hempsmoothielaunch16 until April 30th, 2016. You can also enter their contest social media platforms using the #hempproteinsmoothie hashtag! You can check our their website here. (300 gram bag for $24.99 Canadian).

What’s your favourite flavour for protein powder?

Ever try Manitoba Hemp Protein?

What’s the most important “pro” when finding the right protein powder?

All opinions are my own.

Fit Approach #NoExcuses 2015 Challenge for Piper

Today I’m sharing my #NoExcuses for 2015 as part of the Fitapproach  Challenge. Check out this Mad Lib that I filled out!

no excuses fit approach

Hey 2015, it’s me Piper (a.k.a Anna)

This year I would like to not be injured/get stronger, play outside with our girls more and run my first FULL Marathon.

It would also be super-duper awesome if I also did the crow pose without face planting this year. It’s not a resolution, though, just a reminder to myself to try and have the best year yet because I want to get stronger.

The thing I am looking forward to most this year is spending time with my whole family; husband and our girls.

I’ll use the one thing that truly gets me out of bed in the morning which is my daughters to help me get up, get energized and get after my #NoExcuses 2015.

Speaking of excuses (ahem), my very favorite excuse is being exhausted after a full days work and full-time mommy duty and I have used it to get out of doing the dishes and the laundry on more than 1,000,000 occasions.

I vow to move my body and be more healthy this year even if it means I have to work out at 8 pm when the girls go to bed.

Even if my alarm clock gets eaten by the dog in the middle of the night, I’ll still have my girls to wake me up in the morning 🙂

I will stop blaming the girls/husband  for drinking the rest of the chocolate milk when everyone knows it was really me.

My  hamstrings are not the reason I make excuses. I will show my hamstrings who’s boss this year and get my strengthening on.

I know that running is better than not working out.

I will reward myself by getting new running gear/clothing.

No Excuses 2015 has just begun and already I am imagining myself a winner. I can’t wait to rock a hoodie from Augusta Active. I can’t wait till my sweaty friends are jealous of how fresh, clean and spunky  I am between workouts with help from ShowerPill body wipes. I can see myself rocking crow pose in new Rock The Course Leggings from Actio926 and looking fit and fly while doing it. And of course, I’ll be taking my workouts to the next level and improving my posture with my new ActivMotion Bar to help me train for my next  42.2 km race with Sasquatch Racing.

Oh, and let’s not forget how amazing my capris will smell in my / during my yoga class after washing with some WIN Detergent. And lastly, I’ll keep rocking my 2015 with clean eats and nutrition from Beaming with Health!

AMRAP Review & Giveaway!

Recently I was given the opportunity to review AMRAP bars. The bars arrived the day after I was supposed to post the review…what can ya do?!??! Anyway, they arrived and I’ve managed to taste them all without reading anyone else’s review(s), not an easy thing to do.

IMG_20140905_165956_edit

AMRAP creates food that is 100% Paleo, gluten-free, GMO-free, dairy-free, and unprocessed. Raw whole foods, like almond chunks, are a top priority in our bars because we know from experience it is clean fuel that feeds our bodies’ daily activity the best. Our bars have an optimal research-based combination of good proteins and carbs for well-rounded athletes. Recommended for a meal supplement or replacement, and especially a pre or post-workout snack.

Piper’s Review:

I had three bars to test out: Almond & Honey, Fig and Cacao, and Cashew & Vanilla. I brought them to work as I thought they looked fairly large that I couldn’t eat all three at once…or even in three days. My co-worker, Melissa and I tested them out and this is what we thought.

AMRAP

Food Facts on the Fig & Cacao

Bar #1: Cashew & Vanilla (we actually tried this one last)

It wasn’t great. The vanilla tasted weird and neither one of us could figure out why. We both felt the texture was weird and had a rush of sweet like cake batter when you bit into it.

Bar #2: Almond & Honey (middle of the pack)

The smell was awesome as soon as we opened the packaging. The nuts were still crunchy and it wasn’t dense like other protein bars. It wasn’t heavy. We both loved this one.

Bar #3: Fig & Cacao (we tried this one first)

It was good. You see all the ingredients lists and it didn’t taste artificial. Another one for the win!

Overall: We both really liked the Almond & Honey and Fig & Cacao but felt the Cashew & Vanilla just didn’t cut it for us. We’d both would buy these and recommend them.

They tasted home-made and didn’t look, feel or taste “processed”.

Vega Sport Pre-Workout Energizer {Review}

If you’ve been around this blog for a while now, you may know my husband is a Vegan and I am not! We are raising our girls to eat everything and anything – so we may have a vegan meal one night and a meat meal another night. It will be their choice as they get older what they want to fuel their body with. {I’m pretty sure Lilly could never give up cheese/yogurt so the likely hood of her being a full-time vegan isn’t great}

I’ve never really got into special drinks, gel’s or protein shakes for running or working out but do enjoy a few “energy bars” post runs sometimes. I’ve tried “electrolyte” drinks post run but struggle with the fuzziness of the drink. My husband however, is into Protein drinks, bars etc….especially Vega products because they are vegan. I’ve honestly never tried his special “drinks” before because I wasn’t sure I’d like the flavour or because I wasn’t a true vegan I had no right drinking the stuff <– weird, eh!

Recently, I was given the opportunity to try out Vega Sport Pre-Workout Energizer {Acai Berry} from Vega in partnership with Fit Approach. I received this box of 12 to test out {thank you}. Have you checked out their Fuel Your Better info?

IMG_20140501_194853_edit

Directions: Mix 1 pouch with 250 ml of water and drink at least 20 minutes before you work out. Simple! So, that’s what I did. The drink provides:

  • Provide immediate and sustained energy
  • Increase endurance, aerobic and anaerobic capacity
  • Enhance mental focus and recovery

At first I was hesitant to drink it as powered drinks mixed wrong (not mixed enough) can be gross. So, I shook my container over and over until it was 100% ready to drink. And…………then, shook it some more 🙂

Small sip here. A little more. Then I guzzled the drink down. It wasn’t bad! I was impressed. I’ve been drinking it before long or hard runs and find that on those days I do drink it I feel better throughout my run.

IMG_20140514_192102_edit

I’ve been using the Pre Workout Energizer to help fuel my runs so that I have the energy to push it just a little more. I try to eat well, drinks lots of water etc., but I never really got into the drinks as I mentioned. There are many things I like about the Vega Pre Workout Energizer drink:

  • The taste was good – not chalky at all {I hate that}
  • The little pouches are easy to travel with {bonus}
  • It’s quick and easy to make {Hello, busy Mom on the go here!}
  • Its’ Vegan and that can be hard to find. Again, I’m not a vegan but my husband is and I respect that. It’s also gluten-free and they have sugar-free options too!
  • An easy stocking stuffer for my husband – please tell me you missed reading this post. 😉
  • The label clearly identify’s what the product is for {Prepare vs Recovery} – Hello, busy Mom again!

IMG_20140501_195115

Would I continue to buy it? Yes. I actually went out and bought a few more of their products to try. Now, my only problem will be the fact that my Vegan husband will want some of my stuff and I’ll have to share. Let’s just hope his supply of Vega products doesn’t run out before mine.

And yes, I’ll be drinking this before my Bluenose Marathon 10k this Sunday 🙂

I guess we are the #vegafamily now, ha ha!

Have you ever tried Vega before?

What about a Pre-Workout drinks?

How do you fuel your better?

PS – Vega is not just for Vegans 😉

Note: I was given the Vega Sport Pre-Workout Energizer product to review, all opinions are my own.

#SweatPink Shoelace {Giveaway}

If I could choose one thing to do today it would be to go for the longest, hardest run that I could. My body is aching for a good long, challenge run. But at 37 weeks pregnant, it’s just not possible for me to do so – even though my mind is wanting to my body needs rest (at least that’s what my Dr. say’s). So a little prenatal yoga and little walks it is for me.

Just over a month ago I was lucky enough to join the Sweat Pink crew with Fit Approach as an Ambassador. Since becoming a sweat pink ambassador I moved into my third trimester of this pregnancy and have been limited to what workouts I can do 😦

You know, for a girl who’s pretty active (running at lunch time to fit one in, working out at home while our toddler sleeps and finding any excuse to walk a little more), it’s been pretty hard limited my “fitness” recently. But I know I’ll get back into a routine once this baby arrives and I’m feeling good to do so.

In the mean time, I have two sweet pairs of Sweat Pink “Pink Laces” to giveaway!!!

To win a pair of pink laces:

Leave a comment telling me how you get your “sweat pink” on AND why?

(Why are you active?)

I will pick two winners on Friday November 30th 2012 at noon (Atlantic Time Zone).

(Unless I am having our baby, then I will pick to random winners ASAP).

Open to those in Canada or US. Contest open for 1 week, winners chosen at random.
