Mid March Weekly Wrap Up

I feel like this year is passing by rather quickly, especially with it being pass March Break! Though I’ve been loving our winter adventures, we’ve had a few tastes of spring and I’m really looking forward to some warmer weather.

Weekly Workouts March 14-19th:

Monday: Nothing. I desperately wanted to run but when the clock hit 9pm and I still had not finished getting everything packed (food/ski gear) for the next day, I decided to trash the idea.

Tuesday: Skiing for 5 hours. The girls and I hit up the hill for some March Break skiing.

Wednesday: Nothing. Took it easy and we went to our local library.

Thursday: Afternoon hike with the girls (half hour) and 6k evening run.

I ran my first run in over 2 weeks. I didn’t really plan to run but briefly mentioned to my husband that I kinda wanted to run. It was 7:30 pm and still light out. His response was quick: “then go get ready, you’ll regret not going”.  I plugged in my Garmin as the battery was close to dying and hoping I could get enough juice in it while I got dress to last during my run. I was out the door by 7:45.

I was kinda dreading this run since it’s been so long but surprisingly my legs and lungs felt great. My Garmin battery warned me twice that it was getting low but I kept running. I turned around at 3k and decided I run back the same way to get in 6. Just as my Garmin hit 4k and beeped at me, it died.

The run was just the kick start I needed however I was extremely sore the next day.

Friday: Soccer game. I was extremely lucky to have my neighbour come take care of the girls as Saï was working. I was late arriving and just couldn’t get into a good grove and played horrible. We lost 1-0.

Saturday: Skiing for 5 hours with the girls. Oh this was a great day! Minus a lunch break, we skied for 5 hours and at the hill for 6.

Sunday: Cycled 12k (39 minutes) – a rather leisurely session on my indoor trainer but a good one.

march 19 cycle

Though it was a bit of a challenging week with the girls, it was still an active one. I’m really hoping to get back into running more and debating on starting a training plan for a 10k or half. I’ve still yet to register for anything but I figure it I start following a training plan, not only can I build my base but I can decided later to register for a spring race. I’d rather not register for a race and have not invested the time to training for it.

Were you on March Break?

Do you ditch workouts when on vacation, maintain or keep them the same?

Ever train for a race though you aren’t registered?

Today, I’m joining for the Weekly Wrap hosted by HoHo Runs and MissSippiPiddlin.

Last Ski Adventures

We got in one more ski day!

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ll know that we like to do active things as a family. Ski, hike, snowshoe, swim etc. This winter our youngest Hilary learned to ski all by herself and even got up the big hill once. Our oldest, Lilly has been cruising around like she’s an old pro!

I really wanted to sneak in one more day of skiing with the girls before the season ended so we headed to Ski Martock yesterday. Even though we had a busy week, soccer game for me and late to bed Friday night for the girls, we still got up early and were at the hill just before they opened. That was a first!

We basically had the bunny hill to ourselves for almost 2 hours (very little people on it).

Then we had Grandad join us again. My Dad is just loving skiing with his grand kids. I sure am thankful he taught and my siblings how to ski at a young age.

The girls got to hang out with Grandad in the lodge while Mommy got in a few solo runs. Spoiled with hot chocolate and cookies.

We skied all day and it was a perfect day to be at the hill. With it being March break, I thought it would be nuts but it wasn’t. Nine runs on the big hill for Lilly and I did around 14. Hilary did 6 half hill runs and way too many to count on the bunny hill.

I would love to get in another day but it might not sure if we can pull it off before the season ends next weekend. We had a great winter of skiing and the girls improved so much!

Do you get out with your kids?

What’s your favourite family activity to do?

Are you ready for Spring?

Dear March Break,

I’m done with you!

I thought it was going to be an amazing week of fun adventures with my kids but when Monday morning at 10am hit and I had already lost my shit 5 times…I knew I was in trouble. March Break – you used to be so much fun….I had such high hopes.

Last year, we took a little ski adventure for half the week and did a soccer camp for the other half – genius, that was just genius! This year with life being so busy leading up to you, I though a “staycation” would be perfect. Wrong! Wrong by Monday morning!!

It’s only Thursday and though we’ve had some fun adventures (I’ll share below), I’m actually really happy I have to work tomorrow. Just for 1 day…no tantrums, no defiant kid who hates getting dressed, no “I’m hungry” five minutes after they finished their massive lunch.  AND…I’m pretty sure they are wrestling on the bed upstairs as I write this. (Not wrestling, I checked but the game ended as someones head hit the wall).

This morning’s they created a game of hopping from one play mat to the other to avoid the crocodiles. It was great, fun, challenging and then they worked on their physical literacy skills: tackling! No joke, my kids started tackling each other (as crocodiles) and my response was “please stop tackling your sister, however your tackle was pretty great. No more tackling until you are playing a sport that requires it”. Who says that?!?!

Yup, March break…I’m done with you.

Monday: I can’t even remember what happened Monday morning but by 10 am I was done with tantrums and our feisty four year old. We went to see the movie “Storkes” with friends – cute movie, they loved it. Then we had an epic spaghetti dinner at a friends house using anything but forks to eat our meal. Messy and hilarious – no photos unfortunately.

Tuesday: Ski day before a big snow storm. We skied from 9:15 until 3 with a quick lunch break in there. Hilary (4 year old) did her first run on the big hill and only had 1 meltdown on the steepest part….fair enough, I probably did that at her age on the hill.

WIN FOR MOM!

Picture_20170316_142156097[1]

Though it’s a bit of work taking them skiing…it’s so worth it! I could do this every day…and maybe I should have this week. Ahh well, though it’s been an up and down week, the girls are having a blast and I’m sprouting a few new grey hairs 😉

Though my husband was working 😦 and missed the ski day, I’m lucky to have a Dad that loves to ski with his grand kids. Three runs on my own was my sanity saver, ha ha!

IMG_20170315_110744_739[1].jpg

Wednesday: Since the snow storm wasn’t as epic as it could have been (and rain) we ventured out to the new local library and got some books out. They also had a March Break event so the girls played some games, won prizes and the four of us got to enjoy the afternoon together.

Today has been epic meltdown morning for Hilary. Since their wrestling match ended quickly thanks to me, they are now playing school. Tomorrow they are at day care of a ST. Patrick’s Day party…sugar them up!

Time to bust out the snow pants and get outside with them…the trail is calling our name.

March break – your not so bad but next year we are not staying home 😉

Are you on March Break?

What do you do with your kids on March Break?

Staycation or Go-Away?

Rookie Moment & March.

Last week I had a rookie moment…you know that moment when you just shake your head at yourself because you feel like you should know better (and you do).

I started training for my 4th half marathon with a strength training workout last week. It was super hard but extremely effective. The second day had me running 5k but I was off work that day and wanted to go to yoga. I decided I’d go to yoga and run that night…no problem, I can handle a double workout day (so I thought).

I struggled slightly through my yoga class as the night before’s workout left me sore all over…but I did it and felt great. As the afternoon when on my energy level decreased and my desire to run wasn’t there. Honestly, I could barely function I was so exhausted!  So, I decided not to run and go to bed early – best decision ever!

As I hit DAY 3 of training I was still super sore from Monday’s workout and hadn’t even ran yet, I felt like such a rookie. My run was great (5 x 400’s) on the treadmill though I messed up and only did 4 x 400’s. Ahh well…one day at a time.

March

I really can’t believe it’s April already. I’m 100% ready for spring weather, green grass growing and flowers blooming. March was a pretty good month, though busy with work at the beginning. We enjoyed Lilly’s first March break and Saï has been really busy with work…HERE 🙂 We’ve sure been loving having him home at the end of his shift; tucking in the girls for bedtime and for me just being able to spend more time together. I kept up my “building my base” and starting using a training plan for Johnny Miles Half.

March Mileage

April

As for this month, I’m just wanting to enjoy half marathon training and get better sleep. I need more sleep. Last night I was in bed before 9 PM and didn’t get up until 8 AM when my girls were begging for breakfast (fair enough).

When was your last rookie moment?

How was your March?

Any April goals?

Building My Base Week #9 & Skiing

Last week was March Break in Nova Scotia, therefore Lilly had no school. We decided to take Hilary out of day care and I would take a week’s vacation. With Saï starting his new job as a casual Paramedic, he picked up shifts as they came in which kept him really busy.

Even with it being March Break, I managed a great week of workouts. I’m still kinda baffled how I got it all in. Some days didn’t go as planned, which meant other days had to be shifted around but I had a solid week.

Week #9

What was Planned v.s. What Really Happened:

Monday March 14th: Yoga | 5km Treadmill Run. I did some skipping to warm up before my run and whipped myself in the butt (literally). It really hurt and for a while that night. My run wasn’t good but I got it done.

Lilly was in a 1/2 day soccer camp Monday to Wednesday so Hilary and I got to hang out, run errands, go to the library, played at home and spent time with Saï.

IMG_20160314_210529_edit

Tuesday: Yoga | Yoga. I managed to get to yoga class since my husband was home that day, however I had to rush home as he got called into work that night and needed to get a few hours sleep. (I’ll take that over him being away in PEI). Then we drove to Clay Café so the girls could paint a ceramic statue thing. THEN…we had four families (Mom’s and kids) over for a pizza party.

Busy and crazy day …. but I got my yoga in 🙂

Wednesday: Run | Nothing. I ran out of time to run as we had to pack that evening for our ski trip AND I watched Finding Nemo in the afternoon with Hilary. Around 9:20 PM I said to my husband that I still wanted to run but that would require me to shower and stretch. It would have taken me another hour or so to do all that and I was exhausted from the day before.

He suggested I run early in the morning before we had to leave….so I went to bed.

Thursday: Ski | Ran 3k at 6:15am & Skiing. We took off at 8:30 AM and drove 2 hours to Ski Wentworth. I spent the afternoon skiing on the bunny hill with Hilary (3) and Lilly (5) got her first proper ski lesson. Within minutes she was skiing on her own!! Saï and I got in 4-5 runs thanks to my parents hanging out with the girls.

Green for St. Patrick’s Day

The conditions for skiing were not great but not terrible either. I had to work really hard at the bottom of the hill, slowing my speed down and carving more on icy spots. My thighs were burning on every run – felt great 🙂

Friday: Ski | Skied. We skied most of the morning on the bunny hill with Hilary. She just wanted to bomb the hill with us skiing backwards down the hill in front of her. It worked. She was loving it.

March Break Ski Trip 2016

Lilly had another lesson and went to the top of the hill with the instructor. We spent the majority of our day on the bunny hill with the girls. It was FANTASTIC! Sai and I got handful of runs in.

Saturday: Nothing | Ran 5k. This was a last minute planned run as we traveled back from our ski trip to my parents house. I had an hour to squeeze in a run and managed to do that, plank, PT exercises and 10 minutes of core workouts! My lungs hated the cold weather but I sure felt great afterwards.

Sunday: Run | Ran 8k. I wanted to run between 5-7km, really hoping to get the 7k in and managed 8. I ran out of my parents subdivision which is ALL hills and I was done after that, ha ha!

IMG_20160320_103830_edit

Seriously, this was a HARD run. I struggled a lot and walked a number of times. As I got closer to their home and realised that I’d have to walk about .70 of a km to their house after hitting the 7k mark, I decided to keep running and get in 8k. Otherwise, I would have had to walk .70km to their house in the cold wind + being sweaty wasn’t going to be fun.

Times I ate out during March Break: Way to many to count. So sick of eating out. Or maybe I’m just sick with the portion sizes. I’m ready to get back to meal planning as well, especially now that Saï is home.

KM this week: 21 km

KM this month: 44 km

Though I struggled during all my runs this week, I’m happy with what I was able to accomplish and to be honest, that’s half the battle. I have one more week before I start my half marathon training plan but I’m moving into the same format this coming week of running vs cross training days vs rest days.

Oh – Happy Spring! We are expected to get a big storm today: 15-20 cm of snow and some freezing rain 😦 Fingers crossed it’s not too bad of a storm.

Week #8 if you missed it is here.

How was your weekend?

Anyone else on March Break? What did you get up to?

Anyone race? How’s training going?
