Rest & Relax {they said}

Well, you guessed it…right now I’m on a few days of REST. No running, no foam rolling, no stretching, no yoga! Just like that. Don’t worry, it’s a good thing.

I saw my Osteopath yesterday and it went great. It made me realize (well, all my physio, massage etc.) appointments made me realize that I really should have study human kinetics. It’s never too late, right!?!  No, I’m not making a career change but I like learning about how the body functions and I’m sure learning a lot about mine lately with my hamstring injury.

Yes, I’m still injured. Frig, I know! It’s all good as I truly feel I am finally on my way to a good recovery finally. It only took four months.

Back to the Osteopath – they have magic hands, that’s the only way I can explain them. Google them if you don’t know what they are. They helped both girls with nursing issues when they were first-born – serious life changing moments.

She did treatment on my calf, my hamstring, my hip flexor, my glutes, my lower back, my stomach and did something to my kidney as it was being pulled downwards. Crazy! It’s a case of the knee bone’s connected to the thigh bone, etc. There was a lot of pulling from my hip flexor in both directions which was causing the pain in my glutes and hamstring for the last few weeks = not healing 100%. Makes sense. Now, the kidney thing doesn’t make sense to me but whatever, she’s the expert.

My 7k run Wednesday night.

I feel good, had to ice my hamstring last night but that was to be expected. So, I can’t do anything for 3-4 days which really isn’t that bad. Last night I took it easy and will do the same tonight. This weekend I’m busy with the girls and then will do a light run Sunday if time permits.

Lilly has her first swimming lessons 🙂 tomorrow and then we’re heading to a fundraiser for my running buddy! She’s running in the Bluenose Marathon – HALF – and raising money for the Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. You can see make a donation here 😉

Any exciting weekend plans?

Would you rather Rest & Relax this weekend or Race/Event this weekend?

My Week Off Running

Yup, it’s true….I took the last week off from running. Actually, I took the last week off from a lot of things. Since running the half marathon last Sunday all I wanted to do was run! Go figure!

My body was sore and exhausted from not only the half marathon but the last 12 weeks of constant training. My mind just wanted to run every day but each day I did my best to rest.

I started reading this book:

Johnny Miles: Nova Scotia’s Marathon King !

I cleaned the house, did lots of laundry – oh wait, that’s normal stuff I would do anyway.

I haven’t been sleeping well as little miss H is getting her 2nd year molars #AWESOME! And by didn’t sleep well, I didn’t sleep for more than 3 hours in a row per night, for the last week.

I painted my nails – oooooohhhhh … aaaaahhhhh! And ate ice cream with our girls 🙂

And, I may have eaten things I haven’t had in months (chips/m n m’s) and in a year+ (pop) a little too much:

I’m kinda okay with not running for 6 days in a row as I have a few minor injuries…at least I think they are minor:

  • sprained big toe
  • left shin pain (Posterior Shin Splints)
  • left SI joint is pretty pissed off – but this is going on a month now.

About two weeks before the half my SI joint started bothering me again. Physio, massage, x-ray’s etc. have been booked and waiting to see the outcome. My massage therapist basically said that my whole left side of my body is out of whack and all these little injuries are triggered by the others. She couldn’t believe how tense all the muscles on my left side were compared to my right.

So, I rested. I thought a lot about running. I even took out my running gear Saturday in hopes of running once the girls went to bed. It just didn’t happen.

It’s a new week and I’ve got the BLT 5k on Saturday that I’m really looking forward to running. It’s with the TTPer’s (Timberlea Tundra Pounders) running group that I occasionally run with. It should be a good time and a fun run.

Beyond that 5k, I have nothing else on the schedule but would like to do a Santa Shuffle and New Year’s Resolution Run if they pop up in the local area. And…..I kinda want to find my next half to train for 😉

That’s it…..I’m hooked on the half now!

Good luck to all those running the PEI Marathon today!

Wish I was there to run, oh I mean…cheer you on 🙂

How many days do you take off after a half marathon?

Ever have to hold yourself back on rest days/rest periods?

Are you done racing or still have more to come this year?

PS – I have a contest / giveaway coming up for CANADIANS!

Pregnancy: When To Go Off Work?

That seems like a loaded question: “When to go off work”  when you are pregnant.

That’s the boat I’m in these days – when do I go off work?

I love my job, the work I do, the people I work with. How do I just pack up and leave my job for a year? Good question.

With Lilly, I saw my OB on a Tuesday and she said I was done. I asked if I could work until the end of the week (Friday) – she looked at me funny and said, “if you want to“. It was great, I had a few extra days to wrap up some reports, clean my desk and files and mentally prepare to leave work.

Friday came and went – I. was. done. work…..for a year! That thought was weird and foreign to me. I’ve only ever had two weeks vacation so the thought of being off work a year just wasn’t tangible for me.

Saturday I went to a prenatal yoga class and just managed to get through the class – oh and I was just 36 weeks pregnant. I thought I’d have a few weeks ahead of me before baby arrived.

Sunday hit – technically, it was still the weekend so I didn’t really feel like I was “off work”.

Sunday night hit and my water broke at 10:30pm – yikes! And baby Lilly was born Monday at 2:22am!!!

Just like that! My so-called few weeks of rest turned into full fledge mommy hood.

I thought I’d miss work but I didn’t even look back. A full year off with my daughter – boy was I glad that I left work “early”.

Fast forward to today, at 35 weeks pregnant with baby #2 and I am working my last day of work.

I’m beat.

I’m exhausted.

I’m so ready for the next stage to happen – baby to arrive.

I’ve slowed down my pace at work the last few weeks, declined traveling to some meetings as it was too challenging to stay awake from not sleeping the night before. I wrapped up any reports, minutes I had to write for meetings and prepared for my replacement to start.

After my Dr.’s visit yesterday morning, she determined that I need to finish work soon. I determined that I still needed a few days of work (to get my replacement up to speed) – what am I thinking you ask? I dunno. But I feel better after having spent a full day with my replacement and am fine to only work 2 days this week and be finished. There is a big part of me that wants to work this whole week with my replacement so I am able to provide her with insight to the groups I work with and attend meetings with her – but I just can’t do it all.

Some people have asked – “you must be excited to be finished“? To be honest, it hasn’t sunk in that I’m done work for another year. Sure it means I am one step closer to meeting this little baby but am I really ready to finish work?

Guess I am going to have to be ready because I finish at the end of today.

I will rest – trust me when I say this – I can’t wait to nap any time of  the day. I even have a massage lined up this week!

I won’t travel far – really I don’t want to be stuck in a car having my baby in cold November/December in Nova Scotia – even with my husband who is a trained paramedic – I’m just not into that.

I will enjoy my time before baby #2 arrives – maybe even scrub the kitchen floor – HA HA gottcha on that one!

So, When Is The Best Time To Go Off Work?

It’s different for everyone. It could be week #38, two months before your due date or waiting until the last-minute.

For me, today’s the day that’s right for me.

When did you go off work with your pregnancy?

Did you wait until the last-minute?

Did you wish you would have taken more/less time off?

SIDE NOTE: I am looking for a few guest bloggers in the next few weeks since baby #2 is on the way. Please leave me a comment below or email me at pipersrunblog@gmail.com
