Runners: Would You Rather ?

You know I love running and following running bloggers. Well, Elle from Eat, Run, Sail (Canadian Blogger) shared this recent running survey and I thought I would give it a try!

Runners: Would You Rather?

Would you rather run in a thunderstorm or a snowstorm?

I would rather run in a snowstorm then thunderstorm any day!

Would you rather breathe through your nose or breathe through your mouth?

I’m a mouth breather until I start thinking about my breathing and then try to breathe through my nose.

Would you rather do 100 squats or 100 crunches?

Oh dear, I dunno! I think I would go with 100 crunches!

Would you rather have a baked good for dessert or an extra serving of your favourite entrée?

Extra serving of my favourite entrée.

Would you rather run on a treadmill for an hour or run around the same street block for an hour?

Oh man, another hard one. Since we JUST got our treadmill I would say on the treadmill only because I think I would lose it if I had to run on the same street over and over again. At least on the treadmill I could read a magazine or watch something on my husband’s Ipad.

Would you rather have a headache during a run or a side stitch?

Headache’s I can handle, side stitches slow me down.

Would you rather have a rest day on a work day or a day off?

Goodness, this is hard! I would say rest day on a day off then I can enjoy the whole day with my family.

Would you rather be a race director or a race volunteer?

I’ve done both but would pick race director. I like working with others to plan a big event and have been part of a Youth Run for 6 years! We grew from 138 kids to 450 in five years. Though I have stepped back from my “race director’s” role (really chair committee) I love the planning.

Would you rather spend your money on running gadgets [HRM, GPS watch, Headphones] or running shoes?

Running shoes 🙂

Would you rather run in a relay or do the run portion of a distance triathlon?

I would love to do a relay someday – it would be fun to see how I could contribute to a team of runners.

This was a great survey, thanks Elle for sharing.

Now it’s your turn, leave a comment answering 1 or more of the questions or do a blog post about it and leave me the link!

My Year in Running

Recently I read A Fresh Start for Molly and how her year went in running. She invited other bloggers to do the survey and I thought it would be a good way to see how my year in running went. I ran a few races but it wasn’t always races or fun runs that were important to me.

My 2013 Year in Running:

January – I started off the year on January 10th with my first postpartum workout (5 weeks). I had a lot of thoughts about running since having Baby H and then got the a-okay from my Dr. to run again. I hit the pavement on January 27th…well it was more running on snow in the cold then on pavement. It was so great to be out running again….oh how I missed it!

After my cold run

It’s hard running and nursing a baby. Some days I felt like I was up against all odds to get out and run but some days I just did it anyway.

May – I ran with Baby H in her stroller for the first time and it was against the wind…not fun! I was tired before the run started, plus it warmed up outside and I wasn’t really prepared. At least I got out, right?!?!

One exhausted Mama!

July – I signed up for Mud Hero 6K even back in May with some girl friends – all of whom had little children too. I was so nervous about this run because I knew it would have me running UP a ski hill. You’d think I would have been more worried about the obstacles but no, I wasn’t. This had to have been my worst race in my entire life! Oh yeah! It was +34 degrees C, we had a 1:00 pm start time and I was more focused on nursing Hilary before I left the house and didn’t even consider my own nutritional needs for this event!!! If you want to laugh {or cry with me} you can read my Mud Hero Race Recap here! I’m still on the fence about next year’s event!

Me "sitting" minutes after I finished my first ever Mud Hero (7 months post pardum!)

Me “sitting” minutes after I finished my first ever Mud Hero (7 months postpartum!)

August – On my birthday last July, I won two free entries to the Run for Women 5/10k Race in Halifax. I hadn’t run since my awful Mud Hero run but went into it just wanting to run and have fun with my friend Meredith. It was by far my slowest time but that wasn’t the point of the run. It was a great little event, my girls got to meet an Olympic athlete and hold a GOLD medal! Win – win!!!

September – In the spring I had signed up for Run or Dye 5k with some friends and my sister-in-law. This run turned out to be a lot of fun, silliness and a good time with friends – I would do it again because it was a lot of fun {though the hosts need to fix their parking challenges}.

In September I was ready to take my running to a new level. I finally broke down and bought myself a Green Garmin a.k.a. new best friend. Note: Never wear you new Green Garmin to a dye run…it’s no longer just green…rookie mistake 😦

run or dye 3

October – I was pretty pumped about the Valley Harvest Marathon 5k I had registered for almost last-minute. I felt I had a really good run and finished within my goal but I learned I take terrible race photos 🙂 I also did a satellite run for Miles for Miracles which was to raise funding for TTTS and support my friend.

November – I didn’t participate in any runs but had a challenging run in the all-of-a-sudden-it’s-winter-cold-weather and my legs just didn’t want to run!

December – Another last-minute race I signed up to do turned into one of my favourites. The  Santa 5k Fun Run took place on December 8th and I actually ran with a friend. Four friends were running in it and I partnered up with one of them. I never run with anyone else mainly because I’m not comfortable holding someone else back, I don’t really talk when I run and I don’t want to feel like I can’t keep up with them. However, it was a great run to do, easy, fun and laid-back. I will do this again next year!

Santa 5k 2013

December 31st – I am hoping to run the 5k Resolution Run {race recap to follow} and really looking forward to it. I’m just doing it for fun with no set goals other then finishing it 🙂

Favourite run: Run or Dye in September – completely laid back, slight dance party and I wore a tutu…doesn’t get much better then that!

Worst run: Oh man, by far my worst run EVER was the Mud Hero 6k in July. It was fun at times, challenging all the time but more importantly, I was miserable afterwards for what seemed like days! I was a hurtin’ unit!

Best race experience: For this year it would be a tie between the Run for Women’s 5k and the Valley Harvest Marathon 5k. Run for Women because it was small but powerful and the Valley Harvest because I felt like I was just starting to get my running back on track.

Favourite piece of gear: That would be my bestie: Green Garmin 🙂

Proudest running achievement: My first postpartum run was pretty important to me. I had stopped running early July 2012 and struggled for 8 weeks with the decision to not run through the rest of my pregnancy due to pain. I was proud of myself to get back out there after taking so much time off plus having two little ones to look after.

Biggest lesson learned: Pace yourself, hydrate and eat well before, during and after every race.

You can learn more about my running by visiting my “Running Page“.

Fitness Survey Link Up

It’s been a while since I’ve done a survey/questionnaire on the blog so I’ve joined a few bloggers for this Fitness Survey from Sara at She Cooks, She Crafts, She Runs .

Fitness Survey

1.  What did you eat for breakfast? Alpen Muesli: Apple-Raisin Chai flavour with lactose free skim milk and a banana. I’m trying to branch out from my love of Raisin Bran and started with this. Not too bad.

2.  How much water do you drink a day? LOTS! I usually drink 3-4 (750 ml’s)  from my Camelbak bottle a day. It comes with me everywhere in Hilary’s diaper bag.

Don't forget to Hydrate!

Don’t forget to Hydrate!

3.  What is your current favorite workout? I just finished doing the Ripped in 30 DVD By Jillian Michael’s. With two little ones to take care of, I have to do most of my workouts while they nap or sleep at night.

I also love to run and I try to do that once/twice a week if I am lucky these last few weeks.

4.  How many calories do you eat a day? I don’t count my calories but I eat enough for me and to nurse my 7 month old. Three meals a day and snacks in between.

5.  What are your favorite healthy snacks? Greek Yogurt, Pink Lady Apples and making smoothies.

6.  What do you usually eat for lunch? Lately I’ve been making wraps almost every day of lunch. Can’t get enough of them. Sometimes I pair it with a little cheese or apples and usually water to drink. I like the occasional 1/2 cranberry juice 1/2 water combo.

My new favourite wrap – 12 Grain Wrap, hummus, spinach and hickory smoked tofurky deli slices! I can’t believe I like them…I ran out of sandwich meat and “borrowed” some of my husbands…new favourite!

WIAW May 7 number 2

7.  What is your favorite body part to strength train? I don’t have a favourite but I like having strong legs.

8.  What is your least favorite body part to strength train? Arms – I have a weak upper body.

9. What are your “bad” food cravings? Neapolitan Ice Cream with Chocolate Soy Milk (Float). AND any form of mint chocolate: Jr. Mints, Pep bars, yum!

10. Do you take vitamins or supplements? I am still taking a prenatal/postnatal multivitamin since I am breastfeeding.

11. How often do you eat out? These days, rarely. Maybe once a month. When I am not on maternity leave and on the road with work, it could be at least once a week.

12. Do you eat fast food? If Subway is fast food, then yes. I stopped eating at McDonald’s when I was 17 due to becoming lactose intolerant and stopped all other fast food restaurants at the same time. Plus having a vegan husband is a good excuse to not hit up a fast food place since they rarely have anything he can eat.

13. Who is your biggest supporter? My husband is my biggest supporter. He is the one that says “Go” when the girls are having a tantrum/not going to sleep and I’ve planned to go running. (Thank you Sai, xo).

14. Do you have a gym membership? No gym membership here.

15. How many hours of sleep do you get a night? Ha! Sleep, what’s that? With a 7 month old and 3-year-old, I get very little sleep. If I am lucky between 5-7 hours a night but never in a row. On a good night I am up twice and on a bad night up to 5-7 times with either girl. Ohhhhhhhhhh dear!

16. Do you have a “cheat” day? I don’t have a cheat day but more of an 80% good food and 20% not so good food. I love chocolate mint anything so I usually treat myself to a little here and there.

17. Do you drink alcohol? I used to but since having kids I’ve almost stopped drinking. I rather spend my money on other things.

18. Do you have a workout buddy? No workout buddy…but it would be nice to have someone who I am accountable to and vice versa. I find blogging is a good way to stay on top of working out and committing to write about it.

19. What is the best thing that has changed about your life since committing to a healthy lifestyle? The best thing that has changed is now I am a role model for my girls. I want them to see me as a healthy and fit person, everyday. I want to play with them, watch them learn and develop life long skills and lead a healthy life.

20. What was the last healthy thing you did?  I went for a run last night while both girls were challenging us at bed time. I desperately needed to go for a run; to clear my head and get a little outdoor cardio in. (Thanks Sai).

21.  What are your favorite shoes to work out in? Right now, I am wearing a pair of old Reebok runners when I workout inside the house….I really need to get a proper pair of shoes and not my old runners. For running, I have a pair of Asics that I’m not 100% in love with but they will do for now. Note: I’m open to suggestions here of what brand to try next….
