Vega Sport Pre-Workout Energizer {Review}

If you’ve been around this blog for a while now, you may know my husband is a Vegan and I am not! We are raising our girls to eat everything and anything – so we may have a vegan meal one night and a meat meal another night. It will be their choice as they get older what they want to fuel their body with. {I’m pretty sure Lilly could never give up cheese/yogurt so the likely hood of her being a full-time vegan isn’t great}

I’ve never really got into special drinks, gel’s or protein shakes for running or working out but do enjoy a few “energy bars” post runs sometimes. I’ve tried “electrolyte” drinks post run but struggle with the fuzziness of the drink. My husband however, is into Protein drinks, bars etc….especially Vega products because they are vegan. I’ve honestly never tried his special “drinks” before because I wasn’t sure I’d like the flavour or because I wasn’t a true vegan I had no right drinking the stuff <– weird, eh!

Recently, I was given the opportunity to try out Vega Sport Pre-Workout Energizer {Acai Berry} from Vega in partnership with Fit Approach. I received this box of 12 to test out {thank you}. Have you checked out their Fuel Your Better info?

Directions: Mix 1 pouch with 250 ml of water and drink at least 20 minutes before you work out. Simple! So, that’s what I did. The drink provides:

  • Provide immediate and sustained energy
  • Increase endurance, aerobic and anaerobic capacity
  • Enhance mental focus and recovery

At first I was hesitant to drink it as powered drinks mixed wrong (not mixed enough) can be gross. So, I shook my container over and over until it was 100% ready to drink. And…………then, shook it some more 🙂

Small sip here. A little more. Then I guzzled the drink down. It wasn’t bad! I was impressed. I’ve been drinking it before long or hard runs and find that on those days I do drink it I feel better throughout my run.

I’ve been using the Pre Workout Energizer to help fuel my runs so that I have the energy to push it just a little more. I try to eat well, drinks lots of water etc., but I never really got into the drinks as I mentioned. There are many things I like about the Vega Pre Workout Energizer drink:

  • The taste was good – not chalky at all {I hate that}
  • The little pouches are easy to travel with {bonus}
  • It’s quick and easy to make {Hello, busy Mom on the go here!}
  • Its’ Vegan and that can be hard to find. Again, I’m not a vegan but my husband is and I respect that. It’s also gluten-free and they have sugar-free options too!
  • An easy stocking stuffer for my husband – please tell me you missed reading this post. 😉
  • The label clearly identify’s what the product is for {Prepare vs Recovery} – Hello, busy Mom again!

Would I continue to buy it? Yes. I actually went out and bought a few more of their products to try. Now, my only problem will be the fact that my Vegan husband will want some of my stuff and I’ll have to share. Let’s just hope his supply of Vega products doesn’t run out before mine.

And yes, I’ll be drinking this before my Bluenose Marathon 10k this Sunday 🙂

I guess we are the #vegafamily now, ha ha!

Have you ever tried Vega before?

What about a Pre-Workout drinks?

How do you fuel your better?

PS – Vega is not just for Vegans 😉

Note: I was given the Vega Sport Pre-Workout Energizer product to review, all opinions are my own.

Runners: Would You Rather ?

You know I love running and following running bloggers. Well, Elle from Eat, Run, Sail (Canadian Blogger) shared this recent running survey and I thought I would give it a try!

Runners: Would You Rather?

Would you rather run in a thunderstorm or a snowstorm?

I would rather run in a snowstorm then thunderstorm any day!

Would you rather breathe through your nose or breathe through your mouth?

I’m a mouth breather until I start thinking about my breathing and then try to breathe through my nose.

Would you rather do 100 squats or 100 crunches?

Oh dear, I dunno! I think I would go with 100 crunches!

Would you rather have a baked good for dessert or an extra serving of your favourite entrée?

Extra serving of my favourite entrée.

Would you rather run on a treadmill for an hour or run around the same street block for an hour?

Oh man, another hard one. Since we JUST got our treadmill I would say on the treadmill only because I think I would lose it if I had to run on the same street over and over again. At least on the treadmill I could read a magazine or watch something on my husband’s Ipad.

Would you rather have a headache during a run or a side stitch?

Headache’s I can handle, side stitches slow me down.

Would you rather have a rest day on a work day or a day off?

Goodness, this is hard! I would say rest day on a day off then I can enjoy the whole day with my family.

Would you rather be a race director or a race volunteer?

I’ve done both but would pick race director. I like working with others to plan a big event and have been part of a Youth Run for 6 years! We grew from 138 kids to 450 in five years. Though I have stepped back from my “race director’s” role (really chair committee) I love the planning.

Would you rather spend your money on running gadgets [HRM, GPS watch, Headphones] or running shoes?

Running shoes 🙂

Would you rather run in a relay or do the run portion of a distance triathlon?

I would love to do a relay someday – it would be fun to see how I could contribute to a team of runners.

This was a great survey, thanks Elle for sharing.

Now it’s your turn, leave a comment answering 1 or more of the questions or do a blog post about it and leave me the link!

Happy Running!

First Run Of the Year: MECRaceOne 5k Recap

Whoops, I didn’t tell you…..but I signed up for a race late last week and ran it on Sunday!  Gasp! I know, I know…always share it on your blog first…sorry peeps!

I signed up for the MEC Race One in Halifax last-minute as I wasn’t sure what the weather was going to be like or child care for the girls. My husband was home and was going to run it too but injured his neck. The girls stayed with my sister and parents and had tones of fun!

The weather was calling for lots of rain but I was hopeful it would still be on. I even tweeted about it:

Word on the street (twitter world) was that it was a go! So we left the house and headed down to Point Pleasant Park. It was raining pretty hard when we arrived so I got my bib # and waited it out in the car until Krystol arrived. At 8:50 we stood under a little tent before the start of the race; there was less than 100 people. This was by far the smallest race I’ve ever participated in. I was starting to feel like this was a race I shouldn’t be doing. Totally second guessing myself.

Me, excited to run in the rain!

Me, excited to run in the rain!

We started the race and I felt terrible. I don’t know if it was the rain, the terrain (wet, slightly muddy crusher dust) or if it was because I wasn’t really warmed up but this wasn’t going to be ‘my race’. The first 2km was terrible for me or so I thought. I wasn’t mentally or physically ready for the HILLS but there they were facing me and everyone else.

Route PPP

Krystol was running the 10k which was the same loop twice and somehow she managed to stop at an outhouse (we were in a park) and catch up to me on the first big hill! Killer strong girl she was!

Happy Runners before!

Happy Runners before!

We ran together and at times I told her to go ahead if she was wanting to, I didn’t want to hold her back. I’d eventually catch up to her and we’d run again. I had a friend volunteering on the course, so that was nice to see her just over the 3k mark.

IMG_00000184

I really struggled with this race, not because of the weather or the terrain but just physically and mentally. As I mentioned I almost felt like I shouldn’t have been there, that I was over my head. Which is odd considering I run 5k’s lots and further distances in the past. It wasn’t a bad event, it was well-organized and had everything you needed, minus the public washroom opened before the start. The weather – meh – you can’t change that and I am totally fine to run in any type of weather we have in Nova Scotia. I guess I was just not feeling like a runner that day.

I high-fived Krystol as she turned to do a second lap and stopped my Green Garmin at 32:46. I was disappointed in my time. Saï came over and asked how it went and all I could say was “I did worse than that Valley Harvest” (back in October). I struggled with the Valley Harvest 5k but finished 32:21 so why was I so disappointed in this run, in my pace. I really don’t know. I guess I had a set expectation in my head that I was going to have a great run and rock it.

But I didn’t. And that’s okay (now).

Post race happy runners

Overall it was a great event and I am happy I did it. I am very tempted to do the other four runs throughout the year that MEC has planned all over Halifax.

Sometimes you just have to have a bad (to you) run so that you can refocus and have great runs!

Any one run this weekend?

Anyone do Disney? Dopey? Any distance at all?

Ever get your mind-set on a run and have it go down hill?

Forget That Your Body Aches

You know you’ve had a great workout the day before, when:

  1. Squatting to use the bathroom kills your thighs and you worry you’ll have to go pee again.
  2. Bending over to pick up your kids toys feels SO good on your hamstrings and you stay in the “pose” a little longer. Maybe because you like the stretch or because you can’t move.
  3. When you walk up stairs, any stairs, your calf muscles are shocked that you are using them again.
  4. You go to reach for something up high and feel your back moan.

Then you put your shorts, shirt and sneakers on and workout just as hard!

Feel that burn…ALL…DAY….LONG!

Ouch!

PS – Thank you T25 for an awesome workout yesterday at the office with my co-worker. Always nice to have a partner-in-crime when doing a fun crazy workout, dripping in sweat and laughing it off together. Can’t wait for next week’s workouts.

Don’t Get Discourage

After a rough night with baby H…wait, can I say that anymore since she is officially 1? For now, she’s baby H and she had me up every hour last night. I got little to no sleep but still managed to function pretty good today.

This was probably my most stressful, busiest, longest day of my first week back to work. Up at 6:15am, H got up at 6:30 which was going to be “my time” before I got them both up at 7.

Oh well.

I had packed their breakfast the night before as I had to drop off the girls at 7:30 in order for me to travel 1.5 hours into Halifax for a full day meeting with our larger department. Somehow, I managed this with no problems…win for me!

All day long, I would sit, listen and then stand for 30-40 minutes so my back wouldn’t seize up on me. We had our lunch break and with 5 minutes left a co-worker and I decided to go for a power walk to get fresh air and some activity in. I mean, it was the Physical Activity, Sport and Recreation Department that was meeting, we had to represent. {almost everyone had been out at this point}.

After that little 5 minute power walk I was pumped and ready for my workout tonight.

I drove home, got the girls, made dinner, we played and then I put them to bed. And then I though, I have to do this all over again tomorrow.

My plan was to workout tonight. …. …. ….

My eyes are exhausted.

My body is tired.

And I desperately want to just sleep workout.

But, I just can’t. I just can’t bring myself to go workout and sweat. Silly, eh!

It’s okay. I’m not discouraged…I’m just listening to my body telling me that sleep is more important and I can work out tomorrow night. {At least that’s my plan now}.

a good laugh

I’ve got my weekend workouts covered…a soccer game (can’t wait) and maybe a 5k Santa Run Sunday morning. Still not sure about the run…it would be awesome to get out for a 5k but I haven’t trained for it and know I wouldn’t do great…but running isn’t always about getting a PR … sometimes it’s just about getting outside and being active.

Do you ever get pumped during the day for your evening workout only to change your plans in the evening?

When is sleep more important than working out (for you) ?

Fit In Your Workout

It’s been a crazy week here and I haven’t had time made time for a good workout. I haven’t let that get in my way of trying to do a little here and there. I try to find some time to workout (a.k.a. increase heart rate) each day  even if I can’t make time, I always have 10 minutes.

So, I fit my workouts in where I can this past week….

1 – While running errands at the mall for 2.5 hours….I walked extra laps on each floor of the mall (1-2 laps) and up the stairs multiple times – even after I was done shopping.

2 – While cleaning the house last night once the girls went to bed as I had to get the house ready for Hilary’s Birthday party today. I did this workout below twice. Randomly in-between cleaning the upstairs of the house and the basement. I used the girls play mats since they are soft on the body versus the hard floor, kept my sticky-note and pen with me. I messed up my stop watch and was only able to “time” the first round. It was around 10 minutes of fitting something in….better than sitting on the couch.

SONY DSC

Not major workouts but it was something. A few tips on fitting small workouts in during the day:

1. Park your car further away from the store and walk a little more.

2. Walk extra laps before shopping, in-between different stores and after shopping.

3. Take the stairs – ALWAYS.

4. If you take the bus, get off earlier and walk for 20 minutes or more.

5. Stop what you are doing and do 10-20 of the following: jumping jacks, squats, push-ups, tricep dips and then get back to what you where doing, Repeat it 1-2 more times, this could only take 5-15 minutes of your time. Think of it as some “me time” 🙂

How do you fit in your workouts?

How do you keep track of your workouts?
