Don’t Tell My Treadmill BUT…….

I’m kinda digging these early morning runs lately 🙂

I’ve been doing as many runs as I can outside these last few weeks. Why? Well, its gorgeous outside for one and really, REALLY, who wants to run on a treadmill if they have the option to run outside?!?! Don’t get me wrong, you know I LOVE MY TREADMILL but right now I’m loving running outside.

Also, I’m testing my leg. If I can run outside for my long runs or multiple runs in a row then training for a half marathon has to be adapted…..but so far it’s going really well with my hamstring. Might even have my last physio appointment this morning!

I’ve run on paved trails, dirt trails, side walks and gravel roads. I’ve run in direct sunlight and shady spots. My poor treadmill is probably wondering where I’ve been!

Early morning sweat

Early morning sweat

The fresh air, the cool temperatures, the sun on your face, the breeze against your skin and yes the sweat DRIPPING off your body in places you didn’t think you’d sweat.

Yesterday morning’s run started off with me rolling out of bed – literally! Sai had just brought Hilary into our bed after she’d been crying for a bit and I didn’t want to get her going. I quickly reached in my sock drawer, then for my shorts and shirt and then found a sports bra. I tip-toed out the bedroom, down the hallway and went to our basement bathroom to wake up.

I was so tired, I didn’t even bother putting my contacts on, something I ALWAYS do! Once I was changed, I laced up my pink Asics (love these) and went out the door to start my Garmin.

Foggy glasses

Foggy glasses

When I got back my glasses started to fog up and I was only able to take a foggy selfie and the sun rise before heading in the house. It was a great start to my day which had me sitting in my car traveling to a meeting all day.

Oh, and you can’t forget getting home after your morning run before everyone in your house wakes up – oh that’s awesome too! They were all sound asleep! Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Don’t worry treadmill, our date later on tonight is still on. You’ll get your 7k with me….unless I decide last-minute to go for a runch as a runner is always prepared with their running gear at all times!

Are you running outside or inside right now?

How’s the heat treating you on your runs?

Do you try to beat the heat and for an early morning or a late night runs?

Summer Fit Gear Exchange ~ Canadian Sweat Pink Ambassadors

Oh Monday morning, we meet again! So bitter sweet after 5 days off work as I had a mini vacation since Canada Day. I’ve run outside a lot, had a yard $ale, spent the weekend with my little family, date night with my husband and swam in a lake with our girls. Best 5 days off in a while! I even took a mini vacation from social media!!!!

I’m excited to share the Summer Fit Gear Exchange with you. A few Canadian Sweat Pink Ambassadors decided to do a Summer Fit Gear Exchange last month!

Janelle from Wholly Healthy Blog sent me a package! First off, my reaction was “Who’s sending me stuff from the Running Room” and then “Did I win something I don’t know about”. I also wondered if Sai had bought me something for my birthday from the Running Room and had it delivered to the house…but nope! Janelle was super on top of her gear exchange and got me ALL of this:

Buff headband; Asics headbands (3), GU brew; honey Stinger and Ultima Replenisher and a lovely letter.  When I finally opened the package and took everything out, my reaction was “Holy shit”!!!! Seriously, she got me all this! I really was blown away! I absolutely loved everything and will use everything! Thank you Janelle so much!

I got to buy for Laura from Healthy Foodies, Losing Booties! I really wanted to find something related to Zumba since that’s one of her loves (besides her husband and two cute kids). I didn’t have any success with the Zumba theme but managed to put together some other items I thought she would like!

Vega bars and vega hydrator (my favs), a purple towel for after working out, salt water taffy after I saw she liked it, a gift card to Starbucks, colourful hair ties and a book. The book says “girls just wanna have fun!” on the front and I wrote a bunch of quotes and a few recipes in it with the plan for her to add to it.

The Key is just Being Active

The other night I took Lilly to her soccer practice with Hilary in tow. It’s always entertaining when I take both girls somewhere as Hilary doesn’t like to sit still. Okay, it’s more entertaining for other people not me. I’m not sure which one ran around more during that one hour  soccer practice but I do know they both had a blast.

Lilly was with her friends and listening to her coach while Hilary and I walked the track with her friend and parent and another mom. All of our children go to day care together and will be in the same school in September!

We walked the track together and got to know each other a little more. What we did for work, what our husbands did, sleep challenges with our kids etc. Eventually we got talking a little more and I learned that one was a “gym rat” (her words not mine) and the other is starting her first Learn to run 5k in August! They learned that I like to run, a lot 😉

After walking a few laps the little ones wanted to get out of their strollers to play in the sand pit/kick the soccer ball around too. I got thinking about gyms and they are not a place I frequent very often. When I’m visiting my family, I do like to hit up GoodLife Fitness, especially the female only gyms.

We have three local gyms within 10-30 minutes of where I live but I just haven’t brought myself to look into them. I love to run and be outdoors. I love to be active with our girls all year round. I do value what a gym can offer people and I do value the opportunities that it can lead to.

This next statement has always been something that I believed in and use in the work I do daily. The key piece is that “being active” is important no matter what activity you are doing. Being “active” at the gym, outside, inside, with people, without, on a plan, fly by the seat of your pants – it’s all good. It’s all good because you are making yourself healthier and happier.

My run on Thursday sucked (sorry, Mom) but it did. I honestly hated it. I looked at my watch WAY too much. I stopped a few times to catch my breath after a long hill. I even stopped once because I just didn’t want to run – even though I was ½ a km away from being done my run. Once I finished and had a chance to cool down, I was relieved it was over.  Though I wasn’t happy at the time, I sure was happy after I got my activity in.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m super thankful I can run and that I could do so on my lunch break, rather than 8:30 at night. It wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t good and it was far from awesome. BUT – I was active. And that’s all that matters!

Does it matter to you what people do to be active?

Do you like going to gyms?

Do you like to workout with others or on your own?

HARD Run = Happiness.

When I got up yesterday (Thursday), my plan was to run that evening since I had taken a few nights off to sleep. Yeah, I went to be super early twice this week – like 7:30 pm and 9 pm as I was completely exhausted. So when I woke up yesterday, I set out my running gear on my bed and went about my day.

I had an awesome work day co-facilitating a workshop at a local camp. We were outside, doing games, learning, sharing…really just a great day with great people. Then we had to get through dinner and I took Lilly to get her hair cut while Sai and Hilary made a birthday card for Lilly (she’s turning 5 on Sunday – Woah!).

Once I returned home my energy for running was gone. We put the girls to bed and went about our night. After saying that I had really wanted to run my husband said to me {at 8:23pm} “Go now and get your gear on, do it”. So I did!

I was outside by 8:30 and ready to go. i had to start off slow and figured I could run between 3 and 5 km…really, I wanted to hit 5k but wasn’t going to be upset if I couldn’t do it. As you may have read the other day, 5k’s are HARD for me right now 😉

Wow, that first kilometers was mostly up hill, what was I thinking? Actually, I was thinking I’d just run my normal loop! After the first kilometer I was breathing pretty hard and my legs felt weird! Eventually, I realised that this run was not going to get EASY and the struggle was real.

I struggled up the second long inclined street but tried to control my breathing. Around 2.75km, I big bug flew into my left eye, ouch! That took a few seconds to get out and deal with but I kept running. Finally, I was on a straight stretch of the road and it was flat. Though my legs felt like a baby fawn after it’s been born – super wobbly, uncontrollable and awkward, I kept running.

This.Was.Hard!

I kept running for some reason.  I kept running and had a smile on my face the WHOLE time! I was loving it! I truly was loving this struggle of a run!

As I got close to home I noticed my time and figured I could get a sub 30 minute 5k so I pushed it and managed just over 30:03. For a run that was 100% a struggle for me, it was perfect! It was JUST what I needed.

HARD. RUN. DONE!

HARD. RUN. DONE!

I needed to be reminded that running is fun.

I needed to be reminded that running is hard before it gets easy again.

I needed to remember how much I loved running.

I needed to remember that being outside with others during my workday is awesome.

I needed to be thankful for a husband who pushes me out the door when I’m not quiet feeling it.

I. NEEDED. THAT. HARD. RUN.

Post Run {blurry) Happy :)

Have a great weekend.

Cheers, Piper 🙂
